Electric Pick Sound Volume?

Tool recommendations, information on your favorite automatic and/or mechanical lockpicking devices for those with less skills, or looking to make their own.

Romstar wrote:I've seen manual pick guns work on one to three pulls. Electric pick guns on less than 5 seconds.

Other times, on difficult locks, they can take upwards of a minute to five minutes.

It depends completely on the lock, and the knowledge of the user.

That sounds a good price for a black and decker,

Ive not got much further on either of them as i have so many projects on at the moment,

The screwdriver version is purley the making part, there isnt any prototyping to do, just the finished product,

The interesting one is the coil activated one, i made up a simple timer circuit with a 555 timer chip and was trying various solanoid coils with it to try and get a fast enough movement,
At the time i couldnt find a small enough coil that had enough strength and speed but will run from a dc battery supply, i decided to wind my own and made the core but didnt get any further on with that.

Thankyou for bringing this back to life, i will root the bits out today and have another go, somtimes a rest from somthing helps the creative brain a lot (for me anyway) cheers.

tempted

Postby tri-city » 29 Mar 2005 20:34

i'm tempted to take my electric pick apart, but at about 160 a shot it's a bit expensive. i think if i could copy hpc's in some way it would save many future £'s.. one tip for anyone who wants a elec pick go to goole and do a search for hpc elec pick, if you live in the uk you would think that you would have to buy the uk version which on one of the us sites is $245 i think but the us one is $159 thats a lot cheaper and the only thing is the charger ( i think ) but correct me if im wrong. it's got the us plug on it .. but all it is is a 2.4v charger which i'm sure anyone could sorce in the uk. even if it means going to asda and spending £12 on a new black and decker elec screw driver. i think the site is www.lockpicks.com but i'm not sure

about that screw

Postby raimundo » 30 Mar 2005 8:50

I don't have a lektrick pick, never used one, seen it on tv though, but about that screw, someone called a grub screw, there are set screws with allen heads that are made with nylon inserts on the end, you could look in the yellow pages under fasteners, and an talk to someone on the phone about that, like many screws, they are probably available in various diameters and threads. :) of course, as set screws, they probably have points on their nylon tips, but that can be cut flat.

Do it in a bag, if they have torque adjusters on there will be loads of rollers inside that will fall out, as ive said in the other thread, look through skolds threads and you will see one on a home made electric pick, click on that and you can see a pic that shows the insides of the commercial one, it is an offset flywheel on the motor which in turn hits the back of the picking arm.

As a word of note though, you will not be able to make one with just an electric drill!! you need to machine various parts that require a lathe or milling machine, if you cant use these or own these forget the project, which leads me to think why are you bothering if you have a new hpc commercial one?

I'm going to be pretty ticked if it turns out that the HPC electropick is just a $20 screwdriver with a couple of gears and a spring.

had a look

Postby tri-city » 7 Apr 2005 6:31

ive just taken apart the hpc, it's pretty interesting. and very basic, it has an off set flywheel which lifts the pick arm up and down ( well the down is spring back movement ) the pick arm has a very small bearing housing on the end to stop wear as the fly wheel turns, finaly the pick arm is anchored with a smooth bolt set into the two outside secureing bolts, and on the end the adjustable spring to counterbalance the fly wheel.
as for the screw driver it's the same battery pack and the housing is simular . ive taken out all of the wheels, 6 in all and the tools, all i'm left with now is the housing which ive done a slight rebore to all i need is the off set cam fly wheel and the pick arm a few screws and springs and i'm away.. :? ive put a post on buy sell trade to see if anyone has any broken picks for sale.. why not make some money out of old rubbish. if anyone has one lying around i'd be very interested. so to the bloke who said "is my pick a $20 screw driver " well almost... i would say about $49 is about right, judging by the materials inside.
