low and high pins

Hi all!

I'm still very new to this practice. Since now I managed to pick some pin-tumbler cylinders and padlocks... I even succeded sometimes (after much time practicing "very-light-tension" and a good piece of luck) to pick some cylinder with some spool pins. I'm having a hard time, now, in picking some cylinders with spool pins and with a pin configuration where the deepest pin (5th) breaks very low and the 4th (and even the 3rd in another cylinder) breaks almost high. I can't reach the 5th pin without puzzling the other in bad positions...

I started out with the small half-diamond pick but now I'm practicing with a hook pick.

Can you give me some hint ?

youre on the right lines try a deeper hook if you are catch ing other pins you have set this way you can reach over the set pins

if you are using the longest hook you have and are simply disturbing the set pin and you go by the set the pin behind it, you can use more tension when you are moving the pick head past the set pin, the use less tension again to set the pin.

I would recommend a Falle-type deep hook. It provides great feel and will help you set that tricky last-pin in no time! The pick itself is quite tricky at the beginning, but i learned it quite fast.

Tnx for the advice... My hands are getting more used to use hooks (that in facts gives more difficult to manipulation that diamonds, obviously...) and I'm happy about it. I even managed to re-keying a cylinder for "training purposes" putting in just 3 spool pins and training again with the hook. About the falle pick, I saw some pictures of it but I don't know where to buy them (as long as maaaany other types of picks ) in europe. I bought my southord set at multipick-service.de, but if anyone knows a good online store in europe can give me the link ?

i have the same problem, i can pick the lock but i dont actually set the one pin because it sets when i set the pin behind it(read that slowly).

Its impossible to use a half-diamond on a lock like that, and the really curved pick is too large to fit it. I'm thinking about filing it a tad to make it work but i hate to mess with a nice new set.

Falle picks are kind of hard to get a hold of and costs a little more than others. So if u want falle-style picks, I would suggest making them by your self. There is plenty of templates and threads where u can find info on em'.

Hi!

Following your advice, I found on zeke79 website the great video tutorial of pyro for making picks!

I found out that, except for the grinder and hacksaw blades, I have everything I need, so i purchased a cheap grinder and somm blades and I'm beginning to work

I think I'll post some pictures and impressions to have your opinion.
