does a "Snap Gun" really work??

how come you want a snap gun? this is your first post and with no profiel we know nothing about you, i'd advise you buy some normal picks first to learn, if you want a snap gun to quickly open a lock, be it a neighbours lock or you're locked out of you shed, it isnt the way to go, a locksmith would be the best option in that case, picking isnt easy, its not something where the tool does the job for you, it takes a lot of time and practise to learn.

of course if you can pick very well already, ignore that last bit!

if you are in the UK, make sure you get slim line picks, they are easier to break if you are heavy handed, but normal picks will be too big to fit ni the locks, if you are in the Us or canda, or anywhere else outside europe, you should be ok with normal picks.

i would advise learning to pick normally first then sorting out a pickgun later if you want to. i've never used one so i dont know how easy to use they are, but i would guess that like any tool, you have to be able to pick a lock nomally before you can use it properly. i know people who have said snap guns they've made have worked better than ones they've bought, so its probably best to spend your money on some locks, or just wait a while.

as for videos, you've found the best resource out there to learn to pick. read the FAQ's, the stickies and anythig you're recommended to read. the MIT guide is a must, and how stuff works has some good animations. other things to look at are places like crypto and anything else the FAQ's recommend you read really! if you want a video on how to make picks, check out a video by PYRO1234321, its the best there is for making picks. there is basically everything you need within this site, use the search tool and you'll get all the info you need.

Don't buy one yet. You can make one from wiper blades. There are examples in other threads. Sorry, I can't direct you to the exact ones, but I'm sure you can find them easily by searching. They work great. You can also make variations which allow for different degrees of force or snap.

Yes snap guns work. Don't buy one just learn to pick locks the real way.

I didnt know you can buy snap guns because as what i have been told the ones that are sold are called "pick gun" where as if you refer it to snap gun you are talking about the ones that dont use mechanics where as the ones you buy do use mechanics so it should be refered to as a pick gun, so in away a snap gun is homemade unless you buy it from another user that has made it. Well thats just what i have been told anyway.

Snap guns, mechanical and electric pick guns used in skilled hands are very fast and used in the correct locks, very efficient as well.

That being said, there really isn't a picking tool that doesn't rely on a degree of skill and knowledge in it's function and use. Pick guns in particular are not really a hobbyists tool other than for the coolness factor.

Until you have a thorough understanding of how a lock works, and some good experience at picking, I would recommend staying away from pick guns for the meantime. Pick guns are mostly used by working smiths where time=money.
