All Picks disturb NO.1 pin. HELP???

Postby Truck » 26 Dec 2003 5:27

I have a SouthOrd 32 piece picks. The small hook is my favorite pick but everytime I try to pick the most inner pin, which is, NO. 5 and the pick will disturb pin NO. 1. I tried other picks like arrow diamond pick but it happen the same. I do not want to disturb the first pin because some locks have a lower set pin on pin 2 or 1 and a higher set pin on 5 or 4. My front door dead-bolt lock is designed like that. (Pin 5, 3 set high, Pin 2 set low) And I know by looking at the key shape. I hope the picks have a small degree of graduated curve up to the end like the falle-safe picks. The falle-safe picks are expensive. Although I have the money, I do not think that I am able to get them easily.

Any ideas can solve my problems? Nobody complain about this, or IS IT JUST ME?

Would it seriously hurt you to try and make your own deep-curve pick? Many people say the quality of these picks are inferior, that is total rubbish, IF they are made right. If they are made extremely well, then they will be better than a bought one.

It's just you. For a long time, that was the only pick I had, and I didn't have any trouble with this. Just keep practicing, learn to be more precise in your manipulations, find a lock like the one you're worried about and learn to open it consistently.

I understand your frustration. You may want to start your procedure (when possible) with a more rearward pin, and perhaps leave the frontmost to last on that particular lock if you find you're accidentally oversetting it.

Otherwise, take the advice already mentioned. :)

Definately Look into the Peterson Reach pick http://www.peterson-international.com/i ... .htm#Reach

I personally find the plastic handles to give more feel than the rubber handles. And at around $2, its not such a big investment. The half diamond they sell has a very gentle taper, that can help in these situations as well.

The SouthOrd half hook definately seems to have a very "quick" taper. I suggest grinding a bit of the top of the pick near the handle. This will probably make your pick a little weaker, but I think if you handle it gently, it will be okay. Good luck, and please tell us how it goes.

Chuck,

Have you ordered from Peterson without difficulty? And, if so, are you just a hobby picker? Not being a locksmith made me shy away from ordering from them.

Yes, I like the LAB picks and Paterson picks because they have a narrower tip compare with the SouthOrd picks. However, I am living in Canada BC, Vancouver and ordering picks from company will have a huge problem because most of the time, they will not make the package discreet. In other words, they will not false the declaration form, I think. I am lucky that I am able to buy off the picks on ebay and able to make the package discreet.

As some of you know, the west Canada three provinces are strict on picking tools. However, it is the opposite on radar detector. I am starting to think that the law doesn't make sense. :x Some states and provinces allow you to do or have certain things but somes are very strict.

Anyway, I cannot make myself a pick like the falle-safe one. I do not have the tools and materials. Besides, I am afraid cuting the narrow tip on the pick because it will also cut my finger. File it down will make the pick get hot and hotter and I do not think this is a good idea.

As a hobby picker, I was able to get orders from Peterson. I ordered just a tri-fold case, and one of their trial sets of picks. Luckily they made a shipping error and I got the complete case +set and the additional picks. Definately a truly beautiful case for picks. Nice picks as well. Nicer in my opinion than the Southord stuff, although I havent had a chance to try the new slim stuff. Pretty inexpensive as well.
