Hello ..I have just got my first lockpick set. the lockpicks are southord brand and i got a 14 peice set. I did not have a clue about lockpicking until i read the greg miller instructions yet I still cant pick a lock .My lockpicks did not come with a manual so i dont know to much. i know about the pins and stuff but im just not geting the tension wrench what it is and how it works. it came with 4 things wich are called rakes and 11 other picks diamonds, hooks etc.Even thoe i have read the greg miller manual i still cant pick a lock. im doing something realy wrong with the tension i dont get it i think im supoce to turn the door knob.then lift up on the pins to see wich ones are binding but....i can figure it out. none of the pins seem to be binding and i cant quiet get what rakes do i think the rakes are tension wrenches..i have read about the brush teqniuqe but it dosent work for i dont do something right. and from what i read i am suppcoce to use a kwikset door for starting, and i have been. Plz help

I'm in a bit of a rush now, so I don't have time to flame you (I'm sure someone will be here shortly for that). First of all, re-read the MIT and Crypto guides to lock picking, you don't fully understand the theory yet and can't apply it.
Secondly, there is no way to pick a lock without some form of tension wrench. Picking a lock without a tension wrench is like inserting the correct key, never turning it, and wondering why the lock won't open. Basically, the tension wrench operates as if it were the key. You don't turn the doorknob, just insert the tension wrench into the keyway and put clockwise or counterclockwise pressure on it to simulate a key. Hope that helps

Gimme a break man, the last four are tension wrenches! Rather than just reading the MIT guide, make sure you read the glossary at the end too =) Don't start picking until you understand what all those tools are used for, otherwise you might break something!

Welcome to the site. You're definitely getting any early start in lockpicking. My parents never would have let me get a set at your age. Speaking of parents, try to stay away from messing with your house locks especially when you're first learning to pick. Your parents might have a change of heart about your new hobby if the lock on your front door suddenly stops working.
To keep the natives here happy, search the site first when you have a question to see if it's been asked before, and try to be as specific as possible about what your problem is when asking. After reading over the MIT guide, have a look at the site FAQs for even more great information.
Good luck and happy picking.

Thx ezar. I use the lock on my back door becuase nobody could ever get a key to work in it but me. But they dont know that. besides you can lock another door after that in the garadge but i still cant find the pin that's keepin me from getting it unloked.

Tention wrench goes in keyway, apply tention. Insert pick into keyway push pins up to shear line, open lock. Repeat.
Look, you quite obviously have very little understanding of how a LOCK works, check out the lockpicking section on this site : www.howstuffworks.com
I'd also like to say, to avoid a serious BBQ try to sound just a little more intelegent.
If it doesn't seem to make sence, take a minuite to look at who said it... do you still want to know?
