It doesn't really matter if you know which pin you're on. Whether you're setting #3 or #4, who cares as long as it sets. It does matter that you can't move one pin at a time, if that's the way you're trying to pick.

What are you using as a pick? If you're using something homemade, get a Southord. If you're using a Southord, get a Rytan. Trust me -- it makes all the difference in the world. (But, then again, practice makes all the difference in the world, too).

i have a southord and i cant spend any more money, dont ask why. i am using the small rake. my problem is that i cant work with each individual pin because the tip of the pick slips off the tips of the pins. and i cant really tell if i am on a pin in the back especialy. and i cant tell if i have set any in the back because i cant feel them hardly because of the front pins. please help me.

THe rakes are designed to hopefully slip over the pins. Try using a small half diamond or even better the half hook. Take it slowly, be careful, and just keep practicing. Eventually, you will "just get it" . Good luck.

A good Rytan pick, I suggest a blue diamond hook, would probably cost you $5 shipped. I'm not asking why you can't spend any more money, but you might want to think about it.

I just checked for you, Macaba, and the place from which I bought mine -- the ONLY place I've seen them for sale to a hobbyist -- only ships within the USA.

If you get really desperate, grab my attention and we'll talk about the legalities of me buying a couple and shipping them to you. I'm not about committing crimes, but if it's legal, we can probably work something out.
