Picking padlocks

Postby starkweather » 26 Apr 2005 8:00

Hi,

I bought a couple of padlocks from eBay to practice my padlock picking and I am having trouble with one of them. The Chubb padlock I can get fairly quickly with a "mountain pick" but I have an Abus (no. 65/35) padlock that I cannot seem to pick.

Could someone give me some advice on which pick I should try using, or any other helpful advice? :?

Best Regards,

ps. I tried doing a search before this post, but I got some kind of error (SQL Error : 1016 Can't open file: 'phpbb_search_results.MYI'. (errno: 145)

Kekeke...I just picked an ABUS 55/40, first time...pretty easy...picked in 5 seconds when raked.

Anyways, if this is your first lock, ABUS is too hard for you. I suggest using a Kwickset, that way you can work up with pins. Or go grab a Masterlock #3, good starter one. But really, you should only work on ABUS when you've tried other easier locks first.

What pick did you use to rake it?

First time I did it, I used my home made half-diamond, then I switched over to a snake, just to see if I could do it. There is a spool pin as the first pin I believe, so it made life real hard. Remember, just the right amount of tension and it will open up in seconds.

I can get very close to opening it as I can feel the plug turn quite significantly. I will keep at it. :x :x :x

When you feel that, you should let off the tension slowly until you can pick up the last remaining pin stack. It turns significantly, most likely, because it's caught on the security pins in the lock. You have to let up on the tension to free it and ultimately crack the lock open.
