3 digit lock

When employing any given security system, one is considering the time it would take to bypass the system in any manner, be it covert, destructive, etc. Although a three digit wheel lock wouldn't be very effective in protecting plans to the nuclear reactor, it just might keep your co-workers out of your briefcase when you go to the boss's office to drop off your resignation. They're also cheap and convenient to use, the ideal light deterrent. That's why they're still made, they're effective when employed for the purpose they're intended for.

Just a fun thought, but this could score free combo locks. Just walk up to a manager/supervisor and put on a con.
"You know these locks you're selling are inferior blahblah blah."
Make the bet that if you could break it in less than five minutes you get the lock for free. If not, then you buy (because you opened the package anyway). Even if the touch method doesn't work your chances of hitting the combo inside of five minutes is good. Just something fun to do, but nothing I think i'd try.

A good three digit lock will never be as good as a good four digit lock. And so on.

I would trust most things with a 5 digit lock on it, assuming there was no easy trick to open it, even without any clever electronics. As long as it is manual, it will be too slow to start rolling through the codes.

A delay to entry is a delay to entry, be it 96 hours or 30 seconds. It all depends on what you want to protect from whom for how long, and how easy you want it to be to open it.

SFGOON: I understand your point, and I agree that's why those cheap 3 wheel locks exist. But how do you justify $40 for a 4-wheel lock that is equally as easy to bypass as the $10 3 wheel? That's where I have a problem. If you look at the "Contractor's Grade" lock packaging, any reasonable person would consider what it says, consider that it is $40 and not $10, and draw a conclusion that it is going to be a reasonably good lock. In the case of my friend, all he was looking for was something that would slow a person down for a few minutes. I don't think he had unreasonable expectations for a lock he paid $40 for. That is what I find misleading and just this side of criminal.

I have noted over the years as a locksmith / safecracker that the only reason that the cheap locks are still made is because there is a general attitude that locks in general only keep the honest people honest. (why spend the extra $?) There may be some truth to this but I think that it is more an issue of ignorance or interest. Are we not usually knowledgeable mainly in the things that interest us? Some are just not concerned about security reqardless the press time it gets. When a new security concern arises they are most often influenced by advertising, or the real professional. As professionals, locksmiths should spend more time determing what the customer really needs for the application, explainng the pros and cons of any lock.

What about the Master four wheel locks? Or Sesamee? Can those be manipulated by feel? I've tried unsuccessfully; hoewver, I've heard they can also be opened using a feeling device such as a shim... although my luck with that technique is poor as well.

Some master 4 wheels can certainly be done by feel as easily as some 3 wheel. Some of them are not subject to this attack, but a small shim can be used to feel for the "flat spot" on the side of the wheels. Once you get all the flat spots aligned you can turn all four wheels in unison until the lock pops open. This is the purpose of the "Sesame Decoder" tool, but a small feeler gauge will suffice.

I'd just like to remind, that if a lock like this can be opened by feel under 30 seconds, it is probably opened under 15 seconds with a good pair of pliers (I admit that it's braking, not picking, but as we are talking about security in general I thought that it's worth mentioning)
