Submarine safe

Postby HagenLC » 9 May 2005 20:48

I recently was given a safe that had supposedly been on a submarine. The owner had forgotten the combo, but I someone told me that all military safes in the US have to be set to a certain combo. Anyone ever heard this before? The safe is built out of sheet steel and only weighs about 20 lbs. It has holes on the top and bottom presumebly there were more than 1 and they were bolted together, stacked i suppose. It also has an S&G dial on it. It's empty now but I wouldn't mind getting it open and possibly using it. Any suggestions short of drilling it? thanks.

I know virtualy nothing about safe teching, but it seems silly to me to have all mil. safes set to one combo, if that information was ever leaked they would be in some major trouble.

Manipulation is a very difficult skill to learn, and assuming it is a government safe, Ive heard they only use group 1 locks. Anyhow, your best bet would be take it to a locksmith of safe tech, they can open it for you and set the combination to your request.

When security containers are decommissioned or transfered they are supposed to be reset to a standard combination. This is so they can be opened and reset easily when put back into use. A local safe tech will know the codes used in your part of the world. In use, military locks are reset frequently for security reasons.

No... in service safes are not set to the same combo. That would certainly weaken the security of all of them if one were comprimized.

Out of Service safes are usually set back to the factory combo for the convenience of the 'next' owner.
