I'm 15 and new to lock picking. No I don't pick locks for bad reasons... I just like challenges. I practiced on an Ilco deadbolt gradually building my way up from one pin to five. I can get it open no problem and have been using a paperclip and small screwdriver for a torque wrench. I have been looking into buying an actual lock pick set and was wondering if anybody could give me any advice on quality, price, or anything of that nature. I was also wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of anyplace online or books that could help me out on learning the use of each pick. I noticed the were a wide variety of sets, some ranging to 150 picks. I don't see any value in investing in a set like that. Any information at all would be helpful.
Thanks

Oh Miggs, I think that you've just asked for a flaming so harsh that we will find that you were "crying all night" (Sorry, just had to make the reference.) Read the FAQ. Search for Pyro's video. If you already have a handle on picking, and of course the general size of picks, you shouldn't have any trouble making your own.

Pretty much any set will work for you. A few key points to think about, you can do alot of picking with the smallest sets out there, you do not need the huge sets with 20+ picks. Find a reputable dealer and the pricing will be in a fair range. Lockpickshop.com is a good site with pretty decent prices. Now a bit of homework, do a search on this forum for the coupon code and it will save you 10% on the price there.

It's not that I like to mess with noobs, I like to mess with noobs who expect to be spoonfed and don't help themselves and are too lazy to search on their own.

Please don't - flaming doesn't help anyone.. and that goes for everyone else on this forum....
it annoys me when people don't search - but if you have a look at all the threads posted within the last 5 days - you'll find about 5 or six "help me, I'm a noob" or "help me decide what to buy" or "I've just picked my first lock aren't I great" or "what are the laws in xyz state/country".
you must understand that all this information is freely available in the FAQ section and reading through that is actualy faster than posting a repeatedly posted question, wading through the inevitable flames and then finally reading the FAQ's anyway.... so please be patient with us people who have been here for ages and especially the mods who have to go through and clean up threads like these after a few months because they have no usefull information in them.
Oh look! it's 2016!

Mcm has the right too. 638 posts makes him "seasoned" and probably has more experience than all of us put together. So stop nagging and learn to have fun

I didn't get flamed one time. I actually took the time to read through the site and find out stuff I needed to know by my self.

I saw someplace that oil gauges from lawnmowers or cars could be ground down to make picks. Do you think they would be too flexible or loose feeling?

Nah. Dipsticks make great picks. Just be sure to clean them up before you begin, or else you will make a rather oily mess out of yourself. Windshield wiper inserts are also great. You guys need to really check out the Home brew hall of fame thread, the FAQ, and to search for and watch Pyro's video.

638 posts just means I don't have a life and spend a lot of my time on these forums. That's not to say I don't know about this stuff, it's just that you can't take someone's post count as a direct indicator of their reliability and/or know-how about lockpicking.
