Some of my homemade picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Some of my homemade picks

Here's a SCAN of some of the picks i've made over the past month or so.
The full image is at 300DPI, so to figure out the sizes, divide the pixels by 300 to get inches.

From left to right, I have my three half diamond rakes, my queen and king picks, and my two hooks. The first hook is an experiment in being able to grasp the tip of the pin, the second is an effort to exceed the MACS on a few locks that I have. The last pick is a standard southord hook, as you can see from the handle.

Per my previous post on how i make them, I sand them with 600 grit sandpaper after a deburrign with the dremel sandpaper disks. Afterward, I buff them with polishing compound.

Theya are almost a mirror finish, but due to the scanner, you don't see a reflection, only a matte gray. The bumps on the edges that look like craters are actually slight rounding that reflect the scanner light oddly. In this image, my more narrow hook and the queen are very highly polished (can watch tv in the reflection). The picks are made from Home Depot plumbing snake.

At this point, I've almost run out of locks that I can't pick in under 30 seconds with the homemade picks and I absolutely prefer my narrow hook to the southord. I have designs for a few rakes that I'm working on and I've almost decided that the dremel emery cutoff wheels are better than the silicon carbide grinding stones.

Those are some pretty solid looking picks.

The first one (a hook) took me about half an hour because I hadn't done it before. The king took me about that long due to complexity. The queen took about 10 minutes to shape and 10 minutes to finish with sandpaper and polishing compound.

I plan to make another set of king/queen picks for a friend and maybe a third set for myself so I can benefit from my increased amout of practice.

I expect to have the time down by quite a bit soon, but the really nice thing about these picks is that with the polishing, they really glide across the pins effortlessly. Once I figure out how to not only polish, but also make the bends completely smoothe across a longer distance, thay'll really rock.

What do you mean by solid looking? The scan doesn't really do them justice. They're smaller than the southords but about 25% thicker. With all of the polishing I've been doing, they'll thin out before long.

gyaaaar.

Can't we get a separate forum for these already? Homemade pick posts constitute half of this forum.

I think its a-ok for people to show off their picks in the Manual Section.

-Dave.

By the way, nice looking picks.
Never underestimate the half-diamond.

Oh, yeah. I just think it would be nice if there were a specific place for it.

there is vec, people just dont know about it, the threads will probably get moved/deleted in time anyway, so dont worry about it, just encourage people to post them in there, or post them yourself saying who made them?

the thread is the homebrew hall of fame, but its a sticky and people dont seem to notice them http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=7006&highlight=raimundos+picks

Very good job. Really like the shape of em. However, they could use some sandpaper!

Very nice Heliox. Perhaps you could take a photo so that we can see the finish they have?
