Is this the Kensington lock?

If so you shouldn't have a great deal of trouble. If you don't have a pick just use a small gauge screw driver and drag it across the pins till you get lucky, I tested and it works that way and If you down have a tention wrench I'm sure you could bodge one quickly.

I believe the kensington lock in question was the Kensignton Microsaver. It is a tubular lock.

DB, in another thread you said you keep a file with useful info that was copied n pasted from this forum. would you be ever so kind as to send me a copy or put one on a web page or pm one. If you would like I could set up a webpage with it.

Um, copied and pasted, not so much, but sometimes. I, like many others here, have an archive of all kinds of cool stuff I've come across here and on the web in general. At the moment it is several hundred MB and growing, and that's not including the H2K/H2K2 videos. I hardly think I could send it all to you. As for the web page, all the information is already available. That's how I got it. As well, I don't own the rights to this information so I couldn't just make a website hosting it all. Zeke79 was running a web site hosting stuff that was included with permission of the originator, but I am not sure what the current state of that site is. Last I heard it was pulled down.

If there is something specific you are after I will try and accomodate you. But if it is info that was posted to this site the search funtion works nicely.

Cheers!

The lock posted above by betterthan is not the kensington that I had in mind you were asking about. The kensington I think you were inquiring about is this one here:

This can be opened very effectively with a post-it note. BTW, does anyone else see the irony of opening a lock most likely to be found in an office with a post-it note, a pen, and a piece of tape? It would be like opening the safe in a doughnut shop with an apple fritter! ;)

If you ask nicely someone in your area might remove this troublesome lock for you. Would open it for you if you are near.

pick it, drill it or hand it to the pros

Postby wtf|pickproof? » 8 Jun 2005 13:12

I don't know how hard those kensington locks are, (never played around with one) but i've successfully opened a cheap tubular lock with a small screwdriver as tension wrench and a safety pin as pick within 5 minutes or so. (and that said i am no uberlockpicker at all). You might just have to read up a little.

If the lockpicking way doesn't work out for you, and you own a dermel or something similar you might be able to drill it open (just drill out the pins). No guarantee on this thou.

As other said, attending a locksmith will almoust certenly solve your problem.

I apologize if this seems a bit silly, but I'd say leave the lock on. You allready said that the main reason you needed to take it off was to be able to secure the laptop at your workplace and that it currently wasn't attatched to anything but the laptop.

My suggestion would be to go find a decent padlock, wrap your cable end around your desk or what have you, and secure it by padlocking through the loop and around the cable. That way you have secured the computer as recomended by your company and don't have the hassle of trying to remove the thing.
