Anti-theft thing with dimple key...

Postby digital_blue » 15 May 2005 20:43

Hey folks.

I got this anti-theft device from a friend. It is designed to block the use of a gas or brake pedal. What's cool is that is has a dimple lock. Here is the key:

I've been playing with it a bit as of late, and I've managed to pick it several times using a small hook and raking it across the sides and top of the keyway gently. I hadn't been able to get any consistency though... until....
I had a bit of time this evening so I went to my workbench and made one of the matador picks pictured in this thread:

Well, let me tell you. I can't believe how much easier this puppy got with the right tool for the job. It literally has not taken any more than 15 seconds to pick it since I've started using this tool.

I'm curious if anyone else has had a chance to play with these devices? The label says The Original Unbreakable AUTOLOCK.

Discuss. :)

So are there basically a number of holes (well, dents) in the key, all of the same depth, and some are filled in to various heights to create the bitting?

No, the dimples appear to be drilled just like you'd expect.

No telescopic pins on this one. But it has at least one pin on the top of the keyway as well, but there is no bitting on the edge of the key, so it would appear that the pin only detects whether a key is in the lock or not (maybe?).

I'm trying to figure out why some of the spots appear to have brassy (brass?) inserts and some don't.

And this is the next thing a learned about this lock tonight...

I got two keys with this thing so I thought I'd have a go at the foil impressioning thing. What I learned in the process is that the reason this thing is so easy to rake open with the matador pick is that it only has four pins (that matter). 3 on one side, and one on the other. There are 2 pins in the top but since there is no bitting on the top of the key they don't seem to have any bearing. I'm still a little confused about those, but I'm pretty sure they're there 'cause I can see the impressioned marks in the foil on the top edge of the key.

Anyway, I made the foil impressioning key by setting my drill press to the deepest cut I could find on the key (since I don't have any depth charts for this type of lock I just went with the deepest cut on this key, but I could easily drill a touch deeper). Then I sanded about 1/32" off either side of the key. I applied some foil tape to the key and gave it a shot. First try, after twisting the key back and forth 3 times! Wow, that was easy!

Here's a picture of the foiled key after impressioning:

This was fun. :D

Oooh oooh, and one more thing... :)

I took the foil off the impressioning key and I've just discovered it works very nicely as a bump key. :)

Actually, if those are the only spots with pins, it looks like the "brass" spots are the only actual cuts.

I've seen this thing in the states recently. The package promised it to be unpickable, but I forget what it was branded as. It was $60 US in the auto store, and that seemed like a lot to pay for something to pick then return.
