Most cylinders I've seen have some sort of plate on top, but usually they don't seem to want to come off to any normal poking or prodding. Is there an easy way to do it?

With what? I keep trying a spike or something to dig into it, but all I get is scratches :(

On the the cheap ones, I've just used a mini flat-head screwdriver to pry up one of the ends a bit and then pulled it off with needle nose pliers. Not sure about on nicer ones, I haven't had the urge to ruin one of them yet.

No, it's a piece of cake with something like a Kwikset. I'm talking about the kind of thing you see on a mortise, where there's nothing to "grab," just a recessed metal plate in a groove -- I assume you can slide it out, but I've had no such luck.

Well I just tried with 3 different mortise locks, and they all can be easily pried off with a mini flat-head screwdriver.

But how do you put the cover back again? It really looks like it will ruin the lock if you pry the top off.

I've yet to see one where removing the cover didn't ruin the lock. Of course that doesn't mean a lot, someone with more experience might know of some that allow for that.

Try using superglue.

Works for me!

I use it to hold the plate on after cutting the lock side away, too. With no metal lip for the plate to sit under, it would otherwise get pushed off by the springs or your fingers.

The locks with the thin brass strip covering the springs (i.e. rim cyl) can be dismantled without ruining the strip, or the bible. Lube the strip first, then tap it towards the rear with a small punch and a small hammer. The BFH is not to be used in this situation.

So you just set the punch into the face of the metal? There's nowhere to get purchase?

In my haste.....

You can pry it back a little with a small screwdriver first, to loosen it.
