This is kind of a hard to phrase question so i will try my best...
When I am picking an ordinary lock is the pick supposed to rest on one of the zigzags so when I push down on one end it has a sort of see saw effect? Or should I be putting the pick straight through just below the bottom of the pins?? (picking w/ pins on top) I have picked my padlock a couple times using the second option but I am not sure if its the correct way....I think it might hinder me on other locks. any help?

Whatever works for you is a good option. Although I think a good reading of the MIT guide and the FAQ will really help you out.
