Any Ideas? (For Mounting Practice Cylinders)

Aww darn, and here I thought that you had the sexiest lock board around ! Well it's still pretty cool though.

I just had a piece of that particle board laying around and just drilled holes in it for the cylinders across the top. Then I drilled a small hole from the top of the board down so it comes through the hole I drilled for the cylinder. After placing the cylinder in the hole I select a machine screw that is just slightly larger than the hole I drilled in the top and screw it down till it hits the cylinder and holds it in place. If I knew how to post pictures on this board I would post a pic for you. If you want, pm me your email address and I will email you with the picture attached.

What do you do with the board while you're picking, pip?

i just lean it against the tv or computer monitor
i'd rather have it portable than put a base on it

What about mounting it to metal? I have an old locker door, alittle bigger than a piece of A4, should be good for mounting cabinet locks, right?

are you asking about mounting the deadbolts to metal
or mounting the mini lockboard to metal

i will soon be mounting the vending / cam locks i have
onto a piece of sheet metal
it will basicly be a box with open sides
about 6 inches in between sides
tubular locks on one side
everything else on the other side

I was refering to mounting the locks straight into the metal, like it would be from where the locks came (cabinets, lockers etc)

to mount a deadbolt onto a single piece of sheet metal
might require a search for shorter metal screws
the screws that usually come with any doorlock are usually pretty long
you can try using the regular long screws that came with the lock
but even when the screws are tightened to their max there will
still be a considerable gap in between front and back, it will be fairly loose

you can
cut the original long screws ( not recommended )
you might still want to use the lock on a door..
or
you can take one of the original screws to a hardware store
and try to find a shorter length metal screw ( recommended )

I am also thinking of making a practice board and I would like to know if mounting the bolt is neccessary? Or can I just mount the cylinders? Does the bolt add anything to the process of picking besides just a little resistance to turning the plug? Any advice would be very welcome.

one of the main aspects of lockpicking is
developing a touch for using the tension wrench
i think when you are trying to set the pins or raking
having the bolt installed or not wouldn't make a difference
but...
i have always mounted my locks with the bolt
after you set your pins
….and you know you got it
……..when you turn that tension wrench
………….and you see that bolt slide out

you think “ yes “

as for resistance after being picked
I guess it all depends on the lock itself and how it is installed

My mobile picking board, from left to right easy to hard, including an X5 cylinder, a 6 pin from an old BS1 and a mulTlock cylinder:

36mm thick where the cylinders go in, the rest is 24mm and the base is 12mm, all MDF



Enough room for 7 more cylinders - but thats for another day!

Unfortunately, Yes... The multlock used to be on my front door before it pinged open, the X5 was harder, all the rest are pretty simple, the circlips on the back are getting pretty worn from all the code changes!! Its good to practice!!
