UPVC Door stretcher

Postby bowleya » 1 Apr 2005 14:17

Has anybody seen or used the new Souber tool that spreads a UPVC door when the lock mechanism is broken. Having been faced with this problem on more than a few occasion and having to remove the door from its hinges to gain access to the lock is a real pain. This seem like a good piece of kit but would like to know if anybody has tried it and is it any good.

Got a flyer today about this from SKS. Is this where you saw it?
The last upvc door I had with a broken mech. I managed to ping open using an HPC air wedge. Though only the latch was engaged.
(Was I lucky?)
I may ring them tomorrow and see if they are willing to demomstrate it. It's not like it's cheep!

Hi, I received the latest Souber catalogue a couple of weeks ago and included was the flyer about the new plastic door tool. It looks a strange bit of kit, if you are thinking of getting one, Souber are putting the price up by £30 after the 30th of April, so get one quick!!! I must admit for the cost of the kit at the moment for the amount of broken mechanisms I come across, it is still easier to gain entry through another route and remove the door. Maybe I have been lucky so far and have just tempted fate!!!! I would be interested as you are to see how those who purchase it get on with it? It does say in the advert it has taken 3 years of testing and development before they have put it on the market.

To me it looks like the one sold by Multi-pick. It looks like they have added a holding device to keep it in position on the door and some other bits. We'll have to wait for a review on this new tool.

Like Chris ive done a few upvcs in my time but had a flyer through from Duffells today offering the stretcher at a reduced price with a fuhr overnight lock chucked in .Maybe worth an investment . Not sure how this will overcome hook/claw bolts though

If they are already throwing in freebies with it, it tells you that it is not flying off the shelves, and i suspect why ...

I had a good look at the souber door spreader that you mention and although it was shown to me and explained I didn't like it much. It looked like it would take some time to set up and I really couldn't see it not damaging something or everything. I made up my mind not to buy when I saw the pad of disclaimer notices supplied inside the case. They are expecting you to damage something.

I finally reached into my wallet and brought the UPVC door stretcher. Firstly I for one think its well worth the £150+VAT I paid (before the 30th April), It has lots of accessories supplied and looks the part. I have yet to try it out but having fitted it to a door I can see the princible behind it.

It comes with the neccesary tools to enable you to overcome mushroom, hook type doors. On the 'disclaimer' note, you do have to get the person locked out to sign a disclaimer, thats the only sore point I would have. If this tool damages the door, how much 'damage' does it actually cause?!

I'll let you know how I get on

Handy as a last resort, if the mechanism goes down.

But as said in an early post there are easier ways to open UPVC doors
without any damage..

i think a more more apt name for the upvc strecher would be the upvc door compactor, because it works on the principle that upvc doors are made in 2 parts, there is the framework of the door (not to be confused with the door frame that has the catches that hold the door locked) and the middle insert section, the middle section is smaller than the framework of the door, so when you insert the tool and start to open the gap what you are infact doing is flexing the framework of the door and pushing it inwards towards the middle section, in the instructions for the tool it says to stop opening the gap if you hear a cracking sound, this is because you are crushing the middle section of the door. Saying that though if you work with upvc doors and deal with a lot of faulty upvc mechanisms this is a extremley usefull tool to have

Having worked with pvc for an age now I have never used any tools like the one described .

I would say that i have seen many pvc frames where the corner welds have cracked due to excessive force or if its a bad weld not much force.

Also if this device spreads the frame but squashes the sash I'd pray it didn't break the glass or damage the infill panel

As yet I am undefeated in gaining access with failed pvc locks !!!!

i have this tool and i use it at least once a week it will give you 5 / 6 mm + enough to use the supplied chisel to knock up that hook or mushroom ie when the handle has failed or the bottom has become un-attached and yes it does take time to set up but put that against taking the door off re alighning it ect not to mention what you do to open another door and as for damage well im yet to see any the only thing damaged is the mushroom but you are changing that any way so no problem the only down side i have found is that its not any good on french doors as they are flat -- if you think about it its the same prince able as mr burglar uses with his jemmy creating a gap to spring the latch or deadbolt-- so i attually recomend it and it earns lots of brownie points with customers
IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT NEVER OVERLOOK THE OBVIOUS?
