you have to bear in mind that lock picking is an art, it takes years to perfect and you're always learning something new. you cant just buy a set of picks and hope they come with instructions, you wont have much if any chance of just sticking them in a lock and it opening. if you get locked out of a room/house, your best option would be to check for an open window or call a locksmith.
if you want to learn to pick locks, i would suggest buying a real set of picks rather than the jack knife style, many members say that the jackknife style impedes lockpicking since it reduces the amount felt through the picks.
i would advise getting the pickset with the highest number of picks that you can comfortably afford, look at the site sponsor lock pick shop, you get 10% off there for being a member if you enter the coupon code. a reasonable amount of picks to get would probably be a 14 piece set, this gives you enough tension wrenches to comfortably pick most locks.
good luck with whatever you decide, just bear in mind picks wont come with instructions and ones that do usually provide awful instructions, the best resource you have if this forum, theres tons of info here, just search for it.
good luck!
