First time picking a lock.

Postby Zammo » 8 Jun 2005 5:27

Hi

I have recently moved into a new property but I have no key for the cellar door, my brother mentioned to me that he had some lock picks. I have read the MIT guide but this tends to focus more on Pin Tumbler locks. It does have a few chapters on a similar type of lock the flatland model but it doesn't explain how to use a tensioner.

Here are some pictures of my lock:

With just a pick I have managed to feel a few of the pins being turned but as I don't know how to use a tensioner, I have been unable to move the bolt. With this type of lock if I was to put the tensioner at the top of the keyway it'd prevent me from being able to position my picks to pick the lock. So how should I go about picking it?

Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks
Zammo

Remove those two screws, and see if the lock comes out of the door.

it looks like a 3 lever lock. if you're not in hurry then i'm preparing a guide to these at the moment. but you'll need two "L" shaped wires to pick it, bike spokes are okay, one to engage the bolt and apply tension, and one to raise the levers to the correct height. the bolt should be at the front of your lock with the levers at the back, they'll lift up and feel springy. the bolt will have a "V" section cut out of it (at about 1 o' clock) for your tension wire, which will pull the bolt across to the left when open. there's a sticky on using a 2in1 pick which should fill in the rest, it's in the european lock section, hope this helps.

Thanks, I think it maybe a three lever one too, I have looked at all of the other internal locks in the house (we have one on all doors) and they all seem to be Henderson three levers. At first I was trying to open it with a thin allen key and could feel the pins moving I rotated them all clock wise but couldn't move the bolt across, I couldn't get enough tension on the allen key as it was to short and thin.

I'll look for the sticky you mentioned and also look out for your guide.

Thanks!
