Schlage pins in a Kwikset

I just picked up a set of Schlage Max. Security deadbolts, I took one apart and found 4 of the 5 top pins were spools As I have never picked spools I decided to drop them in a Kwikset for practice. Both the Kwikset and Schlage pins measured .114 mm. Can anyone see any problems with this as a practice tool? Also I've found that I need to use an incredibly small amount of tension, unless I overset them, is that normal?

The pins for Kwikset and Schlage (and many other pin tumbler locks) are the same diameter.

This is how companies like LAB make their money selling pinning kits.

The main difference in factory bottom pins is the shape of the 'point' at the bottom of the pin and the bevel on the top of the pin.

The Kwikset factory top pins also have more of a bevel on both ends than the Schlage pins.

For your purpose of practicing picking locks with spool/mushroom pins, there shouldn't be any problem.

Matter of fact, if I recall, Kwikset bottom pins tend to actually be symmetrical, with the same bevel on the top and bottom. You don't see that in most locks (because, well, it sucks).

Yes, you are correct. Kwikset original bottom pins are identical top and bottom.

However, if the lock has been re-pinned, it probably has after market pins in it which are flat with a very small bevel at one end and pointed at the other.
