repinning American padlocks

how do I repin an american 5200 series padlock. I have pinned the plug, but how do I configure the top pins. Is there a total? IE bottom 5 top 5=10
10 being total for the cylinder. Thanks

You need top pins in as many chambers as you have bottom pins.

also if you accidentally mix the top and bottom pins when removeing them the top tins are all the same lenth

Top pins can easily (in new locks anyways) be identified because they are flat on both ends. Bottom pins will have one end tapered, and this is the end that points toward the key when it is inserted in the plug.
