Thanks so much for the info Chucklz! It's funny, because I was just wondering what those secondary holes were on a plug I'm working on. A quick search sure gave me lots of info!

I don't think I'll be able to resist taking this one apart... and as I don't have a plug follower, I bet i'm in for a mess :D.

Don't worry about it, all you need know is it is a chemical that burns the s*** out of everything, including you if you ever try to use it. In all seriousness, if you know how to use it, it can be a good tool, but if you don't, stay away from it because you can and will give yourself third degree burns.

ummm, thermite is iron powder mixed with an oxidizing agent that will burn hot enough to melt a hole right through your car.

If you have a pick, why use the key?

Thermite is a mixture of Aluminium and Iron Oxide (rust) that when
heated to the correct temperature, ignites and burns at several thousand
degrees. (4 or 5 or 6000 or something).

The ignition temperature is about 6 or 7 or 800 degrees and can't be lit
without the help of a chemical reaction.

This is where Magnesium comes into it.
Magnesium can be lit fairly easily and burns around the 6 or 7 or 800
degrees that the thermite needed, to ignite.

Ignited thermite will take about half a second to reach a couple
thousand degrees, which I would say, would really mess a spectator up bad.
(Probably get a huge radiation burn or something).

This stuff can burn underwater and I am fairly sure it is used for
underwater welding, etc.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE STUFF.
..seriously.

Safe distance is 1.5m with minimal exposed skin.

This stuff can burn underwater and I am fairly sure it is used for
underwater welding, etc.

It is, yet I believe there is another component with it.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE STUFF.
..seriously.

Unless you know what you're doing, have the correct ratios of components, use it responsibly and in a safe, controlled environment. It's not Nitroglycerin.... but it can seriously f*uck up on you if you are stupid with it.
