I thought you all might be interested in a series of crimes that have been happeneing near me recently. There have been several odd criminal occurances recently, the cul de sac where I live has 13 properties, so far this has happened at 3 of those...
Well anyways onto the matter at hand. Recently there have been several burgleries, the odd part is that no one entered the house instead peoples plants, hanging baskets, pots have been stolen from gardens leaving flowerbeds almost empty....
With Varjeal's (I think it was him) who mentioned that lockies may soon become security profesionals, comment in mind how would you lockies, future security profesionals deal with keeping someones plants in the ground?
My guess is its cowboy gardeners swiping peoples plants and potted plants to use in soeone elses garden and charge them for plants they never bought.
Crazy crooks what wkill they think of next.....

I'd personally rig the roots of the plant to a handgrenade. The criminal won't get far with shrapnel in his head.

you should rig an ingenious contraption with lots and lots of THERMITE!
or just put a steel grate of it, bolted down and maybe locked, feed the plants through and no-one will notice one its grown a bit, without roots they'll be of little use.

there's a few devices that are interesting deterrents, but the only real thing to keep 'em away is for someone to get caught...anyways, here's some things that could/are being used.
1. Motion sensor light over the garden. If the yard is large with bush around the edge or fence, a motion sensor attached to a very bright light is a good way to deter the light fingered. Getting caught in the glare of a bright light in the middle of the night (hey I'm a poet and didn't even know it) can be down right annoying.
2. A couple of signs announcing "these premises are under video surveillance....." or "this property protected by my two friends Mr. Wesson and Jack the voice-box removed Doberman" also work as deterrents.
3. A simple low-light camera activated by a motion sensor and hooked to a vcr can also be handy.
4. If there is no fence, think about one. If there's a hedge, keep it trimmed low, (less than 3ft)
The point is to make it as extremely difficult as possible for someone to "accidentally" be there. The more difficult it is, the less likely someone will try.

Thanks Varjeal. I appoligse for double posting you wrote that as I wrote my last post.
WE have a fence and tall hedge surrounding our "back garden" as do most of the houses its stuff from in front of the houses that accounts for the majority of missing things. LAst occurance was last night this morning I noticed a neighbours "front garden" , a lwan with several flower beds" had become a lawn with several round patchs of soil, their large ceramic pots with flowers had been taken as well. a fence/hedge wouldn't do too much good, but the other ideas look promising. We have a few of those security sensor/light things outside, compared to our next door neighbour weare fort knox...
...The mention of fences reminds me of the time we were almost burgleed They had taken apart most of our gate to the back of the property, climbing over they must have noyticed a neighbours patio door and decided to go there instead. A luck escape for us. They got some of their stuff back in the end.

You can buy these things called personal alarms.
They are the size of a small walkman and have a
wrist string attatched to a removable pin. When the
pin is removed, the alarm sounds the most shrill,
piercing sound (quite annoying, actually) and they
are very loud. (Around 150 dB) The idea behind these,
are mainly for use in handbags, etc, that when taken
from who has the string attatched to them, is activated
and the bag snatcher is running down the street
with an alarming bag.
Try some of those or just one and tie all of your
plants to it with fishing line? Tried rabbit traps?

just tell your family to stay off the grass and put bear traps hidden under the grass and soil, then in the morning see what you catch.

You could try many varieties of stinging nettles and poision ivy. There was some sort of plant that combusts with a small spark but I cant remember the name of it.

Gee, has no-one come across this before?
Go to the garden center, buy a roll of chicken wire. Put that along the border you wish to secure. Now bury it. When planting, simply cut a hole in the wire as required. As the plant grows, it will become larger than the hole cut for it, and digging around it will be very difficult, as the roots will merge into it, and a spade will do little to it. Anyone removing the plant will kill it.
If you find the roots are getting restricted, just use wire cutters to pop it back a bit. Bulbs and small plants will not be worried by the wire, as the holes are plenty big enough.
If you ever want to get rid of the whole thing, use a winch or rachet strap, dig up one end, and then loop the wire through the chicken wire. Crank it closed, and it will drag the wire up and over itself, pulling up all the earth and plants at the same time. Then dump the lot in a skip!
If you want to get even tougher, use a layer of heavier wire fence over the top, and anchor that in place with big metal spikes. Write down where you put the spikes.
Stops rabbits too!
