Hi all

Long time lurker, New Poster...

I got my Southord C-1500 picks today and i have two Abus padlocks 60/40 and 85/50. So far i've not had much luck with either. I've read the MIT guide and about 80% of the posts on this forum but i still can't seem to get it to pop.... HELP?

I don't think either have security pins, both have five pins (I think), what other locks have you picked? If this is your first you may want to start with a Master lock, or better yet a Kwikset, and start with one pin, and then add more. In the end, it just takes practice, if you have the keys, use them as a template to get an idea.

Good Luck :D

I agree with cracksman, Abus usually makes decent stuff, so I would start with more of the cheap brass padlock/Kwikset and work my way up. Usually if you can easily rake it, it is going to pick easily (of course, nothing is 100%).

After a bit of research, i found that the 85/50 has mushroom pins, so it looks like i'll be leaving that till i've "got the touch". The 60/40 is a lot smaller and harder to get the picks into even though they're slimlines, but as the saying goes, practice makes perfect... In the mean time i'll go to the local flea market (british term?) and get a cheapo unbranded to play with :)

tnx for your help

Unbranded might not be the way to go either... sometimes these can be extremely frustrating, or absurdly easy. The best bet is to buy the cheapest deadbolt at the hardware store and remove all but one pin and work your way up. This is really the best way to develop a feel, becasue you get a sense of when pins are being set, overset, and unset. It shouldn't cost more than $10 (5-7 pounds?).

WTF? :?

What makes you say that? All the advice on this page seems fine (personally I cant comment on these exact locks being in a different country), but members who have posted are regulars and proficient pickers and the idea about taking all but 1 pin out of a lock and working up is one given to everyone who starts picking because it aids your picking so much, you can feel how the pins react to picking and when the lock opens, then adding pins increases difficulty gradually.

Yes admittedly sometimes newbies get it hard, but thats because they have obviously ignored the things in large writing saying "READ HERE BEFORE POSTING" and so on...

All I can say is, its a good job the language filter got you because there are a number of young people on this site.

In case you haven't noticed, this site is full of both hobbiest lock pickers (like myself) and professional locksmiths. We have thousands of members from dozens of countries around the world. We also have skill levels from never-picked-a-lock to have-forgotten-more-than-you-will-ever-know. With all those people, backgrounds and skills, we couldn't have an agenda. We can't even agree on a T-Shirt design ;-). In my experience everyone here tries to give good advice and if something isn't right, the more experienced members jump in with a quick correction. I don't see any head-games going on, and I would suggest sobering up.

I am usually not one to step in when posts start heading downhill but today I am. First of all, we have visitors of all ages so clean up the language. Not only does it make you sound uninteligent it reflects badly on this forum and its members. Secondly, we have some very very talented members on this forum. Many here are able to pick locks with skills that are only obtainable with years of practice and study of the operation and theory of lock operation. These people come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and have worked hard to get where they are with their ability. We are lucky to have them around so do not disrespect who you do not know. Lastly, there is no one here twisting your arm to stay. If we are so sarcastic maybe you should just cough up the money and join clearstar, Internet Locksmith, TNL or some other internet site and see what you can learn about picking there.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Hmm, does anyone actually beliefe that swearing makes children bad children?!?!?! Sorry, don't want to upset anyone. Really, I just think it's so hypocritical. Well I think swearing makes you sound like a 14 year old kid thou. But bad word filters are a waste of time(IMHO), and of course hypocritical too. I think we have to learn our children to take responsibility for what they are doing. Protecting them from "bad" language:
a) doesn't work at all
b) is, ... you guess it, hypocritical
(and yes, I did use dict.leo.org to find the word hypocritical, so let me enjoy useing it )

The site in general does not like playing head-games, it's some of the members that do. And I am one who sometimes likes to play, so here goes:

'Playing' with locks is the least likely way to master these types of pin, just like 'playing' with your food is likely to leave you hungry. Did Momma never tell you not to play with your food? Once you took Momma's advice, you became satisfied. Take the advice offered here and your picking appetite will be closer to becoming satisfied!

[/lecture]

*Rocks back and forth, praying.* ......."I hope MCM doesn't get to him. I hope MCM doesn't get to him. I hope MCM doesn't get to him....."

I'm a little too cynical to care about the "kids" in these type of circumstances, but I know a number of people 40+ who legitimately find cussing offensive.

Cussing has it's place, whether that be the pub, the school yard, the workplace, the battlefield, the list goes on....

The difference is that educated people who cuss know when to tone things down around those who don't, or are within earshot of people they don't know.

Then there are those who don't know any better, since they have probably grown up in an environment where cussing is apparently the norm. (Household with a severe lack of dicipline/moral integrity)

Don't get me wrong, I can be worse than a sailor in the right setting, but I can also enter into a heated discussion without resorting to expletives to get my point across.

Some say that those who cuss have a limited vocabulary.....I don't agree with that. It's the ones who don't know when to stop cussing that are the limited ones. They get stuck for words, then out it comes....* this and * that...
