im sure you get this all the time but i have read the MIT guide and many other lock picking guides. and i understand lockpicking but i have yet to be able to open any locks. i have tryed to rake and pick each pin. i have went from feather torque to heavy. im starting to get discouraged. any suggestions. i think if i can get one lock open i can go from there.

one of the locks i have is really cheap and should be easy to open.

please help me

thank you

Hmm, what brands of lock are you attempting?
Are your picks bought or homemade?
Are they rough or very smooth?

I have a cheap lock that should open easily too.
To this day I still can't get the bugger open.
It is a Tricircle brand.

Also, are you picking it the right direction? clockwise or counterclockwise?
You should be able to feel the plug turn a little with the tension wrench,
then spring back and the other way should be dead solid, can't turn.
Turn it the way that is springy.
If you can't tell, pick one that has keys and make sure you are
trying to turn it the right way.

Also, a tip that I got (maybe from DB) from searching around, is
to put the key in, put the tension wrench through the hole in the
key and turn it slowly. This should let you know exactly how little
torque you need to turn that particular plug.

Go to your local hardware store and buy the cheapest deadlock that they
have and play with that.

If you already have one that isn't in use, pull all the pins out except for
one set and pick that. When you have it, put in another set of pins, etc.

Don't pick the lock on your front door.
Don't get discouraged, because once you pop, you can't stop, hehe.

The first locks I have picked successfuly where wafer locks. They are usually quite easy to pick. (I've, so far, opened wafer padlocks, cabinet-locks, steering wheel clamps (which are actually easy as *, I picked one of them with 2 hairpins in less than 2 minutes)

I went for easy 5-pin tumblers afterwards, experiencing no problems. If you can't open one lock, just try another and come back when your skills have improved. If this doesn't work for you either, you could repin a 5-pin tumbler to a 2- or 3-pin tumbler. If you try this, read up on the topic _first_! There are several really good threads on howto repin in this forums. Try to fully understand what you are going to do, it shouldn't be to hard, but be patient, well informed and well prepared _before_ you start, and you should be fine. By repinning the lock you learn about it(e.g. dimensions of pins, are there any security pins, ...) and you can vary the difficulty of the lock. I've found a padlock with 1!!! pin which openes before you are able to properly insert the tension wrench  Another one I found had 2 pins, it was on our cellar cabin door for 7-8 year. It was retired after my mum poped it open before I could tell her what the picks are meant to do. 3-pins usualy open before my girlfriend (who has no patience for doing this) puts the lock away. She is also good at raking easy 5 pin tumblers and wafer locks.

As you see, it shoulden't be too hard for you to experience some success. Just be patient, young padawan

Generally, padlocks are about the same as door locks, usually with smaller keyways, and spring tension that you'll have to take into account when you apply tension.

However, a BEST lock may not be the best place to start. As far as I know, all BEST locks are SFIC locks, meaning they're decently made, sometimes have security pins, and will be hard to pick without the proper tools.

There's a good description of them at www.crypto.com. Go to the photographs section, and read the info about SFIC locks.

You're better off buying something cheap from Master, Kwikset, Schlage, Defiant, Falcon, Ilco, etc. A standard home deadbolt.

For picking, the general recommendation is a half diamond or hook. I started out with hooks, but moved into half diamonds as I got into tighter keyways, as it's somewhat easier to move the pick around.

I know this has been repeated time and time again, but get a lock that you can remove all but 1 of the pins. Once you develop the feel, work your way up. This is a tried and true method, and you will be picking a 5 pin lock in no time.

There are over sixty five thousand articles in this forum, I would bet money that the questions you just asked have been answered. On top of that, they have probobly been answered many times by many different people.

There is a reason that there is a 'search' function, and also it may be usefull to use google, ie
