Aircraft Aluminum

Postby skilless » 2 Jul 2005 10:38

My best friend can get me aircraft grade aluminum, anyone tried making picks out of it?

I've heard it's super strong but if it's too soft for picks is there anything else i can make out ot it?
I want to get some while i can but i have to drive a long way to get it so i need a good reason.

I doubt that any type of aluminium will be strong enough at the thicknesses that are needed for picks. Hacksaw blades and spring steel are the most common sources of material for making your own picks. The manual picks forum has alot of information regarding materials and manufacturing techniques.

You might be able to make some shims out of the stuff.

No you wont, shims need to be stronger than your average pick,

He wants to get some let him get some, anything we say will not matter, wait a week for a thread on 'my aluminimun picks dont work why'

skilless,
Do some searching, i know you dont like being told that but each and every post you make will get less and less help and more and more sarcastic until you learn to search before you post, you are just idle.

Alloy of any kind is useless to pick locks with, be told.

Is aircraft aluminium thinner or weaker than the aluminium on a pepsi can? I've seen a video of some shims make from a pepsi can and it worked.

Shrub and I are just having some fun ;0)

Yeah i know you need good steel for picks - and i also know saw blades are what to go for.
But i have never seen aircraft grade aluminium, have you??
I know it is better than your average aluminium but the original question should have been how much better is aircraft aluminium than the normal stuff (as you say there is a good chance it is too soft).

I am most likley wrong but i think pepsi cans are tin.
Actually no matter how stupid i make myself look i just get more and more help on this site - i'll have to start asking about freezing locks ;0).

Yes you are wrong, Pepsi cans are Alluminium.
The reason why the alluminum shims work is because the locks taht they are used on are of poor quality and their security defects are of a standard that would make people cry.

 Fair enough, 8)

Yes i have some aircraft aluminimum,

The differances arent much differant to look at or work with, aircraft grade is a little less brittle and more flexible and tends to be in the thinner sizes off the shelf,
It is probably a little softer than normal grade and would not do for shims, as you say though its free material, if you can store it then get it, you can make pick handles from it very nicely and it can also be used for impressioning if correctally prepared,

Padlock shims are a funny tool, they work on cheap/low security padlocks, some medium security padlocks and next to no high security padlocks,
Good quality, sprung steel shims will work on any padlock a shim will work on, pop cans can be made from alloy or tin but most are now alloy, alloy shims will only wok on cheap low security padlocks if you are careful and on some very sloppy worn medium padlocks,

A good material for a shim is the clip from a vhs cassette, have a look through raimundos threads for details on how to make them,

Not everything you see on these videos is as it seems, times are cut down, locks could be fixed, highly practiced locks could be used (hence familiality) etc etc, im not saying any member from here molestes thier clips like that but one thing that instantly springs to mind was one i saw with a bic pen on the bike lock thing, he pushed the pen on the lock and it opened!! he didnt even turn the pen

Thanks Shrub - now thats how you get respect ;0)

I had thought that you may be able to use it for impressioning, but did not want to put it into my other post on that subject (dont want to look more like a jumped up little kid).
I was thinking you could use a simple bar of steel/aircraft aluminimum for impressioning if it was the correct size (may still be wrong)?

I still need to do some more searching on shims as i am ignorant on that topic also.
