Just won on Ebay

I just got this bunch of locks on Ebay for $3.80 (+9.50 for shipping)

I think I might have got some good ones, but I'm not farmiliar with that many locks yet, anybody see something kool in their?

Here's the description and a pic of Ebay:

You are bidding on an assortment 24 each, mortise cylinder locks used on glass storefront doors, these are used locks, but look almost new. These locks came from the estate of a desceased locksmith. I do not know what kind of key fits them, most have tail pieces on the back, the ones that do not have I have included the tailpieces. I don't know anything about these but some of them have the kind stamped on the front some do not. Sargent, Binco, Medico, Tubeline, Delta. What you see is what you get. HAPPY BIDDING.

do a search under locksmith when you are on Ebay, I've been watching these for about a week and I was high bidder for the last four or so days, I also picked up 21 American padlock pinned padlock cylinders for like $16.00 including shipping Mayby we can get a few members who have extra locks, like myself, to donate some for competition, or practice.

How about this:

I would send out a lock to the most needy, first to respond, answer a question etc. That person would have a week, upon, reciept, to pick it and would keep track of thier time, write down how long it took-method, hints etc. Then they would send it off to the next person. The sender would pay shipping. That might be fun, when I get this bunch of locks I'll see if there are some good ones to share. In the meantime, if anyone has ideas how to add to this, I'd appreciate some imput.

Yeh Medico, they make medical supplies and high security locks. Not to be confused with Medeco, who just make locks.

Nice.. I won one a while ago that was similar, except just Corbin and Russwin (a few Schlage). A good buy.

Careful with the ones with no tailpieces, though. Do what I did -- use them for drilling practice

The advert implies to me that the seller knows nothing about locks and yet he uses terminaolagy like tailpiece which he shouldnt perhaps know in everyday life, only an observation,

We have loads of locks on our ebay but it allways seems to be 1 mortice lock, very high security, insurance approved, 3 lever £10000 p+p

Ok perhaps its not that bad but over here the postage quoted is stupid (although probably right in most cases) and it works out cheaper to just buy 10 from your wholesaler,

I wish we had deals like this on the uk section of ebay but if we do its very very rare, i gave up on searching locksmith (and its alternitives) as all you get is lockpicking cd's, i use specific manufacturers ie ERA lock*, Chubb lock*, the star gives any other items that may have those words with bits on the end for instance Chubb lock* would bring up Chubb locks, Insurance approved lock Chubb, Chubb locks insurance approved etc

I had thought of a lock swap shop a while ago and still think its a good idea but quite often on site certain members dont even reply to a question so how do you expect them to actually send a lock on especially if its to a time limit, what happens when a nebie destroys the lock, he/she has no money but someone has to pay for it.

A lock liabry does sound good though and there could be region specific librareians (sorry for my spelling which seems to be even worse than usual ) who have the duty to distrubute the locks, referance guides can be on site on who has which locks, libarys can then alternate locks on 6 monthly intervals, you could charge a small fee to join the liabry which would include the postage cost for the first lock and a small contribution towards lock costs,

I would be happy to run a Northen one for England if it helps.

The postage looks fine to me. The weight of those cylinders is probably several pounds.

If you can't pick these locks, try shimming them before you try drilling them. Shimming is non-destructive and then you can repin them or take out some chambers etc.

If you have no tailpiece screws, you should be able to get some from the local hardware store, or just take one screw from a cylinder that has two in it. Unless you have them on a door, the only use for the tailpiece is to keep the plug in the housing.

The front row of locks appear alike, and if the keyway is the same, you may have parts of a masterkeyed set. If so, learn the pin heights for that maker and take each lock apart and carefully record the pin heights, the master pin dimensions, etc, even the driver pins you could eventually sort out the math from this data to guess the master key.
In the second row, third from the left, there is a cylinder that looks like it could be medeco, the plug protrudes more than on the other locks. which is a medeco trait

I meant that the postage on the locks offered on the uk side of things is usually very expensive.

By the looks of things, although not in my currency, this particular purchase does appear to have been a good one as everyone says.

Is $10 reasonable for two abloy classic cylinders?
