security pin?

Im new to this so please go easy on me

I have a series 700 American padlock that im working on. All the pins are serrated and there is one spool in the bunch. Needless to say I have my hands full. In an effort to expedite my knowledge, I took 4 pins out worked on picking the remaining 1. When I worked my way up to 2 pins I noticed something odd. The third pin back doesnt do anything. I would set the first pin and the lock would open. Now that I am at 3 pins, I find that the third pin is making my life difficult because if I graze over it on my way to the 4th pin position it sets on the serrated edge. Because I know this pin is worthless I can skip over it and keep on going. If there was all 5 pins in the lock how would I even know if there was a worthless pin?

Is it a type of security pin? Or just an anomaly. Is there any way of recognizing this type of pin when attempting to set it?

Sounds like it's just a pin for the deepest cut, which isn't lifted by
the key.

Some locks including american have key codes that are very deep.

You just have to be careful.

As rakemaster implies, the security from that pin comes from the fact that if it lifts at all the lock will not open.

this is why the falle curve picks are so good, you'll need a pick that can get right under that low pin and work on any pins beyond. a deforest style pick is also good. it'll also help to give yourself plenty of space in the keyway for working, so a split style tensioner, or a falle adjustable, or maybe using your regular wrench in the top of the keyway will also help. good luck.

Does this mean that some pins are actually set to be at the shear line when at rest?

It seems that way. Whether its for security or not is the question.

The real pickle is how it sets on the serrated edge.
