UHaul Padlock

Postby avishar » 12 Jul 2005 19:13

Hi guys,
I've searched for Uhaul and haven't found any actual responses on this specific padlock yet. This padlock does indeed have U-Haul Stainless Steel branded on it as well as on the keys, the bolt has HARDENED written on it is shaped like a puck and has a sliding bolt. http://store.uhaul.com/(wso4zvzydei3yh55oz0rzsb2)/productdetails.aspx?id=210
It is similiar to this except the keys are not round keys, they are standard keys. I've been at it for several hours now and with no avail (using the majestic 13 pc set). Would an electrick pick or pick gun perhaps work? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

(I've been a lurker for a while but decided to sign up and post for the first time today)

Thanks in advance!

Abus Discus is the original, it has a real tight keyway and a lot of security pins. Your lock has seven pins :? not for the weak at heart, the ad says it is virtually unpickable, :P don't believe them

If it is anything like my Abus, you are going to need some relatively small picks to get in there. I don't know how much picking experience you have, if you are just starting you may want to lock at something with less than 7 pins-say 3 or 4

err...sorry to double post, I just looked again, if yours has the normal key (not like the ad) you may only be dealing with 4 pins, count the gulleys on your key and let us know.

I have seen several 'disk' locks and they seem to fall basically into two categories. The orginal is the german Abus BUFFO diskus lock, which has security pin(s) and is a fairly tough pick. The rest all seem to be Taiwan copies (I suspect made by http://lipson.com.tw/) sold under numerous brand names like, Ace Hardware, Brinks, etc. I don't actually have the U-Haul model but I would guess it is a Taiwan lock. If it is the same kind of lock, normally these are not too hard to pick. About the only trick is to use light tension since, unlike most padlocks, these don't have a spring rotating the cylinder back. They pick more like a slightly sticky deadbolt.

I'm wouldn't call myself a newbie, but by the same token I am not by any means "advanced". I started a several years ago when I saw the "Dynakwick" Pick in a Heartland America Catalog  . Played around when I got that and was able to get through standard 1-5 pins. At this time I haven't exactly been pushing my picking limits as it's a relatively minor "bona fide"hobby and I have several jobs and colege education to go through :P I can get all the locks around the house though including deadbolts.

Here is a couple images of the lock I just took to verify:<excuse the quality of the pictures please>

Nope, that is the real deal, not a knock-off. The brinks type that Grudge is suggesting has a much different keyway, yours is identical to the original made in Germany. Perhaps Uhaul has some liscensing agreement? What you have is 6 pins with spools or mushrooms thrown in :) I haven't picked mine yet, but, I'll give it a go tonight and let you know if I get it. Use your key as a quide, also I'm not sure your picks will really get in there.

In any case, this is a tuff nut to crack

p.s. let's race, on your mark, get set, go...... (oops) forget to press submit  go!!!

Wow nice CLOSE UP pictures . You had better not commit any crimes with those picks, because we now have your fingerprints (see the lock closeup) ;-) It does look like the Abus, does the lock actually say made in Germany on the back? If so that is a cheap price (the Abus is hard to find in the U.S.).

Yeah Mick, your correct it is 5. Just so you don't think I'm a complete fool  let me explain:

Image
The 1 pin on mine, if you look close you can see the top pin halfway down, is so short that I figured it was a "0" cut, so I counted that first 1/4 inch as 1 pin.
 o.k. I screwed up

Boy do I take alot of these of storage units, I think alot of locksmiths in our area don't like these. The biggest problem is when people have had them on their storage unit for a long time and never used them. Usually they pick alright, I have had some, where I swore I was getting it picked...but I thought it may of been spool tumblers, so I kept retrying.
I ended up picking it again, cylinder only moves a bit, then I just stuck a small screw driver in and turning it, my tension wrench was just not enough to turn it.

And I have cut these off with a good pair of bolt cutters and another guy...not fun at all!

Its onnnnn! What would you recommend to tackle this task? I'm not too keen on the spool mushroom safety pins deal and/or how they work, I just rake, pick, torque, feel and viola! If you aren't too busy picking at that thing would you mind helping a trainee out? (I did the search for the stuff and saw a couple pictures but am still not exactly certain what exactly these things are and/or how they work)

p.s. This is not a diversion *pulls out bolt cutter*

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT STRETCH THE PAGE!!!

If you want to show very large pictures like, just post the url.
Is that a paracentric keyway?

Well, thanks for bringing this lock back to my mind. After I just ate my pizza :) After reading ufd538's post I thought that perhaps I had picked it and it wasn't just setting the spools, so I went back and yep:

Image

I used a Peterson hook (slim gem) and a Falle-Safe wrench, as the lock retains the key, you can see its picked, if you think that you hit a spool give some extra torque, there is no spring to help move the shackle.

p.s. I'm going over my new sharing limit spending $8.95 a month for a yahoo web page, I have 25 gigs to share, yet I'm still going over, anybody know of anything better?

i had a lock of the same discription, but it was at a public storage. it was by the name of chateau. it looks like copy from the same press and the same quality. i later confirmed this at u-haul the other day.
