Got my Southords yesterday and picked my first locks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Got my Southords yesterday and picked my first locks

Alright - been eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Southord MPXS-14 set for about a week now. They showed up yesterday.

Naturally I checked them out, admired the craftsmenship, construction, etc., then immediately locked myself out of the house. :)

20 seconds later I was shocked to realize I'd opened the deadbolt on the front door open. I locked it again and thought, "Maybe these locks ARE that easy (Weiser), or maybe it was a fluke - better try again." 10 seconds later the bolt was open again. OK, lesson one - need better deadbolt locks on the house... :(

To be fair, I was varying my wrench pressure and lightly raking - so I figured I stood a decent chance of getting the lock open.

Next up was an old weatherproof Master padlock (see pic below). This one I raked open in about 10 minutes (sloppy cylinder) then proceeded to take 25 minutes and 30 minutes respectively to pick each pin individually. To be honest, on that 30 minute run I did not get the lock open, opting instead to go to bed.

So, good picks + 2 locks, twice = my beginner's luck all used up. I'm sure to be schooled shortly by these very same locks - off to Home Depot at lunch today to expand the collection.

I must add, what a complete feeling of accomplishment and pride when I got the padlock open for the first time. I discounted the door lock because it just seemed too easy raking it open. On the padlock, when I picked it pin-by-pin, I was immediately aware of the art/science balance of this activity - wow...yet another skill to learn more about. :)[/img]

Ah I love the smell of newly stamped lock picks in the morning, it smell like VICTORY! ;-)

Congrats Sportsguy :!: There is nothing like the feeling when that first lock opens up and you suddenly realize that 'impossible barrier' just took 30 seconds. :D

A smart a$$, eh? LOL

Yeah, this is the kind of thing even my wife may try. Once, at band camp...ah, sorry, wrong story.

Back in the day, my folks locked the keys in the house. While my Dad and I tried to pop the pins in the door hinges on another door, my wife quietly used a bobby pin (*chuckle at the cliche*) to pick the front door open. My Dad and I were about 2 minutes away from using a very large breaker bar to pry the door open...

The moral is I cannot ever be shown up like that again. :)
