I can see this ending in trouble (or lost fingers). They are not that expensive so buy them. Also this site is about learning to pick, pick the lock.

Tried coke cans, tried measuring tape, tried half a dozen other things, even tried store bought shims, and I couldn't get it to work.

Like the man says, just pick the lock.

Also, buddy, just a quick thing, you might want to get the moderators to fix the spelling of your name. I'm pretty sure you were going for "roguefive."

Ah. You learn something new every day. Over here, rouge is a type of makeup, goes on your cheeks.

How did the guy do it on the H2K vid, it just slips between the lock and he gave a little jerk and walla! but even with the tape measure it's not even small enough  should I have filed it down?

that was also a lock he brought, which meant the gap was prob pretty big. think about it, if you are showing someone you can pick, don't you use a lock you know the exact order for? its more impressive if you KNOW you can do it.

Out of my box of about 20 padlocks, I can only shim about 2 or 3 (using Southord's shims). I would recommend you go to a dollar store and pick up a padlock there or check Walmart for the cheapest locks they got. Usually you can see through the package and tell if the shackle is too tight before you buy. Even locks of the exact same model vary and some may be shimmable (is that a word?), while others not.

P.S. don't forget to open the lock and see if it needs a shim on one or both sides (it needs a shim if it has a notch in the hasp).

Yep, the shim goes in between the shackle and the case so it depends on that gap. Also shimming only works on padlocks that use a simple spring loaded catch instead of rotating ball bearings (like more expensive locks do).

nice question o_O

(and marso: I think that shims are not so cheap.. you can't use them long.. 4-5 times each.. if you're lucky  ..then an unexpensive way is appreciated! )
