first two locks-masterlock

Postby Refanius » 21 Jul 2005 22:19

I have been looking throught the forums for the last 2 days, and I got interested in doing some of this. I looked around my house for some tools and what I came up with was:
-the metal clip off a pen -torque
-three different sized paperclips -picks

I bought two locks today and have opened each of them about 5 times.
They are masterlock 140 (141, but they are the same, right?) and masterlock 5D.

I don't know if these are hard locks or not, but they seem pretty easy. The 140 has a couple of security pins, but other then that it is the same as the other one.

I just love first posts such as this. :D

Well done with the paper clips. The #5 is pretty much the same as the #3, just a bigger 'package' to the lock. The #3 is recommended for a start-up lock, and you've also succeeded in correctly identifying security (spool) pins in the #14* and picking it...kudos, you've obviously got a good grasp of tension. Are you raking, or single-pin picking? Both methods are valuable...don't become reliant upon a single method.

The next step is to get/make some proper tools with the common profiles, then get a 5 pin deadbolt which you can alter the pin config, to make picking more/less difficult.

Have a search for 'templates' if you'd like to make your own picks, and street-sweeper bristles/wiper blade inserts make very good tension wrenches.

Also, go through the FAQ's (if you didn't already), they contain links to many helpful threads.

Read, practice, read, practice....

Please fill in your location, so the regulars can offer advice on further locks for your geographical region. An intro would also be helpful, with regard to any particular field you may be interested in.

Again, well done.

:D

Cool, keep at it, but don't discount raking...

That's how it starts.
