Dudley Drilling

After some reading on the forums about the Dudley combo lock, I decided to try to drill on myself. 3 locks and about an hour later, I have figured out the best place to drill it, and figured I would post the results for all.

Note: My digicam is broken, so I just threw the lock on my scanner bed...



I used a 7/32" cobalt bit, and drilled the hole about 1/4" up and 1/4" right of the center of the lock. There's a softer layer on the very back of the lock, followed by a harder layer further in.

Next... a Master lock!

Not familuar w/Dudley locks. Is that hole for seeing the gate, or for releasing the mech?

The hole is for visually lining up the notches on the wheel pack.

very interesting. is there a way to repair the lock after drilling? what depth did you stop at to avoid hitting anything vital?

You should feel a little "give" as the drill breaks through the back of the casing, this is probably where you want to stop. You can use a file to get rid of excess metal so you can see into the lock.

Just to play the devil's advocate, there's already been a 10+ page topic on cracking the stupid things and I wouldn't exactly consider them high security.

Yeah, I'd say I concur. Though it is off the mark a bit from what this forum is supposed to be about, I don't personally see anything wrong with posting info on a Dudley. Anything that you can smack open with a magazine probably does not represent a High Security risk.

If anyone out there is using a Dudley to protect something really important or valuable... STOP! The bad guys are on to you!

i still think that this thead should be in the secure area. any lock that can so esaly be smacked open with a " magazine" or easly bypassed the info should be in the secure area to help stop abuse of the info.

heh...i'll play devil's advocate as well. most combo locks just aren't that secure.

there's a ton of different methods (along with a couple destructive methods i've developed myself for giggles) to get the lion's share of 'em open.

want security, just gotta pay for it...and drilling takes too long, anyway.

that said, all you really have to do is disassemble one combination lock to figure out most mass-marketed brands; it's a lot different than the issues and complexities of safes, where obscurity is a good idea.

just my thoughts on the matter.

we seem to have our wires crossed here a dudley lock here in the uk is a safe manufacturer http://www.dudleysafes.com/ i didnot realise it was a cheapo padlock in america.
