security pin pressure

Postby sublime progie » 2 Aug 2005 18:12

I am currently picking a schlage level two deadbolt. This is my first real security lock that I have made progress with. Four of the five pins are spools. Right now I have two spools and a standard pin in. my question is: How hard should you have to push up on the security pins to set them. I have to push rather hard to set mine and I am pretty much using no tension because the lock is spinning backwords to set the spools. I am mainly having troubles with the last pin to set. I push it in and let the plug spin back and more often than not I reset the other spool and start over.

Also I am proud to say that I have finally found the right amount of tension to use:D. That is I have the idea for being able to tell

You may be using too little tension at the critical point when the pin has realigned but not quite hit the sheer line. I would try applying more tension (still letting the plug rotate back), and push down a bit harder on the pin. You may also want to set your spools first if you can and then slide your solid pin up. Overlifting is another helpful technique, I haven't practiced it enough myself. The biggest thing that helped me overcome security pins was to pin the Schlage with 1 security and four normal pins, then add more security pins as I got better.

Hope this helps :? :)

Cracksman, you were right. too little pressure. I now have 3 security pins and one normal pin and i have done it 3 times in probably 5 minutes. It takes me a little longer but of course it will come with practice. I am so stoked to finally be getting the hang of these stupid things. :D . :D . :D

Well thanks for your help, as usual lp101 saves the day. :P

I finally ended up getting all 5 pins in and set. I am gonna practice with what i have, changing pin heighths and stuff for a week or two but i am ready to move to a little harder lock. Any suggestions?
