master No. 40

Postby geno » 2 Aug 2005 15:05

I picked up a master #40 this afternoon (only $8!) I found one that had a high low config. This is the first master that has given me any trouble.
The pins dont seem to set. If I run a rake through it I can hear the 2 rear most pins fall when I release tension.

I must say... Its a very nice looking lock.

Its nice having a lock that didnt pop open in 4 seconds on the first try

welp, back to picking

This a a very trickey lock. I cannot get the pins to set. My master #5 will open if the key is turned either way, but the pins will only set if I put counter clockwise tension on the plug. The #40 can only turn clockwise.

None of my rakes are effective either. Up to this point I have been able to open any lock if I spend enough time raking/jiggling it.

Currently I have a snake rake, short hook, small half diamond , sawtooth rake and a double sided-double ended rake.

If anyone has any ideas how I can set these pins or a pick recommendation, let me know.

Thanks

If you are single pin picking this lock, are you sure that muscle-memory
isn't playing a big part of opening?
Try picking it slow.

With ccw tension, which is the pin that most binds?
With cw tension, I would think that this pin would be the least binding.
Try picking it in the reverse order that you can normally open it.

Make yourself a more of a 'reach' hook.

Raking often depends on luck. Try your lock with single pin picking.

Did you read the part where I mentioned that I couldn't set any pins?
Raking is a last resort when I am fed up. There is no real sense of accomplishment in raking.

Sorry if that sounded abrasive. :?

well I got it open again. Its a very odd sequence to get all the pins to set.
I started at the first pin and then moved back. As I pushed the pins down with the short hook I would hold them down with the body of the pick.

I found that when I got to the third pin there was more resistance. Once the third pin set, the first and second could now be set correctly. The 4th pin has a very short cut so it takes just a little movement to get it set.

The strange thing is that I cant just start at the third pin. I need to hold the first and second pin while setting the third.
