What locks to pick?

Postby cha0s » 7 Aug 2005 23:30

Ok, i have hit a wall kinda.. I know that there are a million brands of locks but you guys mostly talk schlage for starters. I can not find a schlage, kwikset, or any other large name brand around me.. What should i do... Order them offline or just deal with what i have?

No Schlage? In New York?!?! Well, get a Yale or an American maybe? Go buy a *good* quality deadbolt. And never forget the joy of Ebay.

Just buy any low-cost deadbolt available in your local hardware store.

Try a local hardware store. If not, like db said "And never forget the joy of Ebay." Google it and order online.

The crappy store brand is most likely exactly the same as a kwikset. If you're just looking to start out, this will be fine.

If this is your first deadbolt, then crappy is good, and you can't get much crappier than Defiant, which they sell at Home Depot. Then after that you can go with a Schlage or head on over to Wal-mart and get a Brinks.

Best I can figure, Defiant IS Kwikset. Probably made by the same people. They share a common 1176 keyway (at least the ones on my front door do).

They might be, but Brinks also uses KW1 as well. So they might all be one group, or they could just share the keyway for convenience.

All the Brink's KIK's and deadbolts I have seen used SC1 keyways.

Weiser and Kwikset also seem to share keyways, often enough.

I was expecting you to say you got them somewhere else. I've bought several Brinks kiks and deadbolts from Walmart with all of them using KW1. I wonder how they decide where to ship the different keways?
