Well, you can manipulate it, pick it, shim it, or maybe rap it, it's up to you.

Although, they ARE generally used to lock things up with..... :P

Good luck with that - I don't know that the locking the back has any more than two pins, meaning the solution is linear and you can pick it with a stick...

The quickest and easiest way to open it would be to shim it. Shims are very easy to make from metal of the proper thickness, such as dust covers on floppy disks. Use a tin snips and form the proper curvature with the shaft of screwdriver by striking it with a hammer while it lies on soft wood. There are plenty of pictures of shim to get the general idea of the shape. The material is essentially free, so a little trial and error won't cost much more than your time.

If you want to find the combination, there are sites which describe how to find the third number and calculate approximately 100 possible combinations to try. You can whip through them in a relatively short time. This calculaculation method is reportedly for Master Locks, but I have found that it has worked for other brands I have. This way takes more time, but you will then know the combination.

Wow,I though maybe a floppy disk cover would work, thnx for the idea.even though its not as fun as picking, but I will give it a try.

Just another tip, if you have not done any shimming before. If you are having trouble getting the lock to open, try the opposite (front or back)side of the shackle. I have found that either the front or the back is easier. Also, be sure to move the shackle up and down as you work the shim into position. It helps to get the shim in to where it needs to be and helps to avoid binding the mechanism you are trying to move.

shim pick etc

Postby raimundo » 10 Aug 2005 8:12

The tiny little keyway is a cylinder with 4 pins I believe, and its too small for any commercial picks I know of, but it is not so hard to pick if you find the right materials for tensor and pick, I would look at large hairpins for tensor and smaller hairpins to try to pick it if your going with the mcgyver style picks. Actually its an easy pick if you have the right tools.
shimming, as dk--- said, will work. look at the dial face of the lock, the locking dog should be on what is your left side as you face it. unless the little keyway model makes this untrue, (ordinarily its your left side as you face it)
the little keyway model is a part of some larger set of school locker locks, in which the authoritarians have a master key to snoop all the lockers.
you will see some shims made with a curve that can operate in either direction on any leg of the shackle, but as you know the leg of the shackle that has the locking dog, you do not need the either way curve, you can make a shim that is less wide and therefore easier to insert by clipping a straight edge from the apex of the curve to a steep diagonal out of the shackle hole. As dk--- said, push the shim in over the locking dog, hold the shim in and pull up on the shackle, then push the shim and shackle back in repeat this about three/four times and the pull out on the shackle part will soon open the lock. You can make a bent wire that loops around the leg of the shackle that stays in the body of the lock, and bend the other end down so that it holds the locking dog back, this will give you a clear view of the tumbler pack, with a little light, set the tumbler pack so that the gates line up where you can see them. then add 14 to the numbers that set it up and you have the combination,

You can also use a soft face hammer to rap open the combination lock. The left side of the shackle is usually the side with the bolt so whether you decide to do this right side up or upside down, apply tension on the lock by gently pulling down on the lock (or up if you position the lock upside down) and firmly strike the side of the shackle that has the locking bolt with the soft face hammer. This should pop open the lock in some or most cases. This works best on cheaper combination locks like "helping hand" that you can pick up at sav-on but it probably wont work on higher quality locks like master from what my lockout course material said.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I might be wrong, but I believe there is a code # on the back or edge of the lock. Look it up and you will find the comb and the key info,
