send an email to chris b , he is always glad to help.
but a gentle tension and only lifting the binding lever a mm at a time pays dividends.

Pick instructions never had any with mine!
My wire keeps breaking at the handle end if you come against a slightly stiff lever, perhaps its my wire thats faulty as my other curtain picks have never broken,
Practice is the name of the game, choose an easy lock to begin with, somthing like a 3u series or somthing,
As pinkly said, imagine the internals of the lock, carefully lift each lever a little at a time until you feel the gate,
It will take loads of practice but once you get the hang of it you will like the process, i can almost rake the levers sometimes on some locks.

thats a strange one, ive got a number of wires and never broke one, ive picked hundreds of locks with it and never had a problem, i would email chris with it and im sure he will send you a wire replacement.
the secret too is very light tension, if you apply a light tension it makes skipping the anti picks a simple task and you put no real pressure upon the wire, thats the first of chris wires ive heard of snapping at handle end, must be a rogue one.

When it first broke it was on a job so i just bent the end to an L to finish the job,
When i got home i bent it properly and it was fine for a while until it broke again, i just rebent it again and it hasnt broke since but it is short,
I was going to mail chris but i rebent it so thought the guarentee would be void,
It is strange as ive not had a home made wire break or heard of another cb wire break, it is possable there were hard bits in the material and it just isnt up to scratch, the thing is though, that would mean that the other wires from that batch of wire must be faulty as well but as we both say, weve not heard of one break,
Just one of those strange things i suppose, i dont excert much pressure whilst picking but the first time it broke i was lifting 2 levers by mistake as they were stuck together with dirt/rust.

you can never plan against a rusty lock, i had one the other day with the biggest spider and egg sake ive ever seen happily camping inside, until of course my wire dragged it out skewered on the end, got a shock though.
the wire could have broke due to being weakened by the bending process, the odd one will always get weakened.
i know its strong as we are all giving it a go at picking chubb 110 locks at moment, we all aim to get this beauty in under an hour, about 10 of us having a go at this one.
with your experience in machining i think you will get a wire sorted that works, chris never voids his guarantee, and is always helpfull with wires and repairs even when down to misuse, always wort emailing even if just for advice on the pick, also his pick now comes with instructions.

Cheers, Pinky,
Only ever had one spider in a lock up to know, as you though, scared me to death when it poped out
Im having a go with the 110 myself on and off, ill have to admit that ive only managed it once and that took most of the evening (well over an hour easily) ive only just got one and not done a lot with it but as you say its a real pickers challenge, are you all using the same lever pack? or are they keyed differantly? if you key them all the same it would even out the comp a bit
Ill maybe give Chris a bell later about the wire but to be honest as you say its just as easy to make another.
