I know this is trivial but use a deadbolt when you leave, before I started picking I used to only lock the doornoob but I am not giving them a headstart.

If the door is hard to get into they will try the windows. If you have an alarm or they cant get in easy they will move to the next house unless they know you have something they want.

Can some of the police or academics in the house tell us if most burgulars are drug related, not preplanned, well planned etc..

Two national newspapers last weekend posted stuff about protecting your house. Neither of the two mentioned what locks you should buy or mentioned picking as being a possible entry method. if you picked a lock on 20 houses you broke into and got caught they could pretty easy pick you for all 20 due to your MO. :)

Here in the UK drug related crime is a huge proportion of crime. At one time two brothers got put away for car crime and car crime in this area fell by 45%. This was a drug related crime

15% of under 15's in this area who commit crime are already heroin addicts.

There are also some 12< who are heroin addicts also

Lock picking crime is rare but when you think about it it's not surprising. A drug addict who needs a fix is going to have the shakes quite badly (even after a fix they shake). I'm quite certain they won't have the dexterity to pick locks because of this but they need so much money anyway they aren?t going to hang around picking a lock. They much prefer breaking a window or door, grabbing some gear and then moving onto the next place.

I personally only know of a few who were really well planned. One of them used his 5 year old son to squeeze through windows to open the doors for him. If the windows were locked he would pick them. He used his son because a child under 12 cannot commit a crime.

Nice father huh?

Very nice father...makes want capital punishment in Canada every time I read a story like that. Anyways..around my little town, most crime is of the "unplanned opportunity" type, and as much as I hate to say it, mostly by under 16's who know their rights very well. That, and drugs.

I dont see why kwikset even bothers to make locks anymore, they're so freakin easy to pick, even their new "maximum security" locks with 6 pins and spool tumblers. I thought I would be in for a challenging treat when I picked one up a couple days ago but when I got home and tried it I was immediately disappointed. The difficulty level was the same as the regular kwikset locks. Good thing I bought a grade 2 schlage lock at the same time, at least that one poses some challenge to learn on.

They bother to make locks because they are the MOST USED and therefore most purchased locks in the US. Figure it out from their perspective. Why make quality when we can keep people ignorant and just make quantity instead.

Well hopefully this site and people like us can help educate the country about this "evil" ploy

Unforunately people always think "it cant happen to me" and so they go for the cheap locks, or the contractor put them on the house when he built it. When people pick up locks , especially at home centers, there is plenty of advertisement for the locks, but almost none for additional reinforced strikes, door wraps, etc that could really help provide good security.

I was quite amazed when I started picking actually.
The first lock I picked was a stupid wafer on a telephone.

For the second one, I walked into a hardware and found the best lock that people in my area use to reinforce their locking of their doors.. its a round lock thats inset into the door above the handle (usually)
In my case the best they had was a 'wren bird'.. ?

I pick it in seconds... and that was with a few days experience.
It seems like most pins dont matter much, its the one or 2 at the back.

Suprised me because people actually trust it...

I posted this in another thread, around the same aim about "with the proper tension, lower grade locks being defeated" and I would love to credit whomever started that thread. However I am new to Forums, LPing, and this site as a whole. Along with an issue with my ADD/ADHD combination I cannot.
Just a lock being on something will generally deter a general citizen with little experience in breaking into something. If someone really wants what you have inside the best security is to not flaunt your lifestyle or the things within. Most door frames made by large construction companies are made with cheap wood and the design is cheap. The windows are mostly thin. If all else fails a dedicated mind will come through the wall, its just a matter on how far they wanna take it. However I suppose it is false advertisement. Anything to make a buck.
I would rather be skilled and intelligent than lucky anyday.
