Warded Locks?

I understand they use a latch and spring to open, and that only one notch is important, but I am wondering, how does it open (I can't grasp the concept), I mean, does the pick push the latch out of the way, allowing you to open it? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question (and it must be to most) But I couldn't find any info on the forums.
