A few HUNDRED? You know, if you just wanted the best picks...
http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=355
(I've got a set of these from that place in the mail to me right now--really hoping they get here tomorrow )
Sounds great--let me know how that goes! I really think that if we had a 'falle deep-curve DIY how-to' along the lines of what Raimundo has done for the Bogotas, that it would be ENORMOUSLY useful to a great many people. Also, something similar on how to do the tension wrenches would probably be just as popular. How many people have already done DIY falles? Doesn't seem like there's too many. If you have, and think they're pretty good, you really should start a 'falle-DIY how-to' type of thread--the masses will love you for it
Yes, I agree--I was kind of thinking that I might be better off getting something big enough that I can make the hooks without having to bend anything--you really think hacksaw blades would be the best choice (I'm not saying they wouldn't be, I just really don't know)?

Yep, got those Petersons and their rubber handled mates
I would strongly recommend not bending, but cutting (grinding). I'm going to give it a go, hacksaw blades for this really are ideal. Take your time and work it correctly (quench them) and I'm willing to bet they last for years. Well I'm going to try it anyways

You need to quench them when you're using a hand file?! (remember I said I was going to try doing this without power tools as of right now, although I might have to wait for the Dremel)

real lockpickers can file that fast!
hacksaw blade is okay for it, i made a couple few deep curves just to get an idea on them, they're a wee bit flimsy for some reason.
for those of you opting to try your hand at making them freehand, remember to plot out/scribe where you want the top of the curve and the tip of the pick.
yes, it's harder than it seems at first when you're grinding away, least for me.
trick i can't use but i know would work is to print out varying sized circles using ms paint or sommat, and use those for guides. see falle picks and imagine the rest of the radius, you'll see what i mean.

Grudge, what a nice set up
With that many gadgets I don't think you need skills
I use the same slide on plastic thing on my picks too
p.s., if you ever get board with lockpicking, I'd love to make you an offer

140 British Pounds, which is about $255 U.S. I do a lot of speaking on security and so it is useful for 'show and tell' but you can do a lot with much cheaper picksets. Lock picking is somewhat about the tools, but mostly about the practice.

Yup, $255 is right on. You could always go for the Government Elite III by Peterson if you've got about $300 to burn.
I've sepent about $100 on lockpicking so far...

Well, considering my bench grinder as an item for lockpicking, I've spent... 80 dollars, maybe.

For me the crafting of the tools is just as much fun as using them. Kinda like the jedi crafting his lightsaber
Since this is purely a hobby for me, I doubt I will ever buy any. Also I am a meat cutter by trade, so I have access to alot of free metal (bandsaw, and hand meatsaw blades) So far I have only crafted a couple hooks and a few tension wrenches. I find it easiest if I anneal the metal first then work with it, and retemper when I have a finished pick. Saves me worrying about overheating, and more wear on my dremel wheels. Once I have a few picks made I will post a pic.
Happy pick making
