newbie picking pin order

Postby h2ocop » 20 Aug 2005 0:52

I am rather new to lockpicking and I currently have two different locks for pratice. The first lock is what I call the easy one I have figured out that the pick order is 3,4,5,2,1 (#1 being at the back of the cylinder). Now that I know the order I can pick it in a matter of seconds with a hook pick. The second lock is a 5 pin home depot deadbolt TITAN. This lock I can also pick but it usually takes me a while, and when I do it seems more by luck. Is there any tip that can be given to to know the order or how to tell the order when picking?

You just have to test each pin every time you set a new pin.
Find the pin that binds by pushing REALLY lightly on each pin and
feel for resistance. You need a VERY gentle touch be able to feel
the resistance without disturbing the pin position.

Every time you set a pin, you have search for the next binding pin.
Remember the pins you already set and don't retest those.

No real shortcut, except some locks tend go from back to front or visaversa. But not all.

H2,

For clarification, the 1 pin is the first pin the key hits
when entering the lock. There is no science to determining
the binding order, every lock is different. You can also
change the binding order by switching the direction of
your tension, or the position in the keyway.

p.s. welcome to the forum :D
