Upvc door alignment

Postby srv » 20 Aug 2005 9:19

Hi,
Was called to a Upvc door problem this week. The door was completly out of alignment, making locking of the door impossible ( bolts wouldn't come out far enough in order to allow key to fully rotate ). After adjusting the door vertically and laterally I finally managed to get the lock to operate, however the locking action is still not easy and smooth. The door doesn't close fully into the frame at the top so when you lift the handle up the roller bolt and hook are binding and stressing the lock mech. Does anyone have any ideas on how to overcome this ?

thanks

HOw did the door get out of alignment? Did the wood warp or was the installation just bad? Would removing the door and planing the top be an option? That's about all I can think of.

Hi,
This is a plastic door. Not sure how it got in this state, probably combination of poor installation and natural movement over time.

UPVC doors can warp and bow aswell as wooden ones and
sometimes all you can do is adjust, file or remove the keeps to
relieve the pressure on the bolts and balance that with the gap in
the door. If the customer doesn't like the gap on the door then
you can only advise them to get a new one or put in some
draught excluder in to plug it up, as it's better than having
the mech break.

Thanks for the replies,
I did actually remove the top keep for the hook bolt as well as the roller keep. I was looking at filing them down but there wouldn't be anything left after you'd taken off enough material. It means that the door now only locks on the centre deadbolt and bottom hook. Would this autamatically void any insurance ?

Removing the keep would probaly technically void the insurance but would
they ever know? Losing the the top bolts is much better than losing the
bottom and over all won't make much difference to the security of the
door when it is locked up correctly.
There are many more people out there with less secure doors that will never
be insurance approved.
If the customer is that concerned then they should speak to their insurance
company and/or be prepared to buy a new door.
