Bump keys and differnt lock types

Postby dem0nk1d » 20 Aug 2005 17:29

I just got a bump key done for a sch-leg lock. Then i took the same bump key, and made a copy of it for a differnt keyway being the kwik. Are the pins off by in chance in the lock it's self

Please dont post dupes. NO this will not work. The keyways are different, and the depths are as well. Spacings.... I think they are different, but no reason to look them up as this wont work already.

Maybe he thinks that if somebody tells him "yes it will work" then despite reality, it might actually work. Perhaps the keyways, spacings, and depths will magically change dimensions and everything will open with the One Bumpkey to Rule Them All.

I think he means that he used the same spacings and depths from a sc1 key and cut a kw1 key with them.

Regardless it still will not work. The depths are different, and the pins appear to be beveled different.

bump de bump

Postby raimundo » 27 Aug 2005 14:29

consider that barry wels was it? cut a bump key by hand filing, and it worked, I have tried some made on a code machine, and had some difficulty, some success, but wouldn't a 9 depth key for quickset probably work on a lot of different blanks in other locks, a perfect depth key would jump all the pins up at exactly the same nanosecond, but is that really happening in all cases? it really is about timing and close enough counts. I think the trick on bumping is a feel for the strike and the tension that can best belearned by practice. How much difference in spacing can be tolerated by the method. that is the question.

No the depth of a KW1 must be cut to 77777 for it to be a bump key 9 is not the correct depth. Anyways you do not need a code cutting machine, you need an existing key for the correct spacing and a few files to complete adjust the key and make it into a bump key. I made my own bump keys and while not as pretty as a bump key off a code machine it worked well. I'll be posting some vids of them shortly and will show the homemade ones too. They worked just as well as the code cut keys. For reference I had difficulty bumping a kwikset because of the poor quality of the lock, it may well pick faster than it bumps.

Im not sure if posting this knowlege for a guy named demonkid with 2 posts is proper, but its more for our other members who replied.

The bumpkeys stuff I will be posting may well be restricted for advanced memebrs only. I'll see what the mods say about it. I mean its not like new information, but it is new stuff because I'm bumping the most common american locks, and not european ones

Kwikset locks

Postby Magic_Joe » 31 Aug 2005 18:54

You must remember that in most older Kwickset lock the max debth was only 6 and a new bump key with 7's might not work. I would try a 6 1/2 cut even though I've only seen 7's in master key systems. This should work most if not all Kwickset locks.

Making a bumpkey for a Kwikset seems to be alot like modifying your cutting torch to light cigarettes.

There really isnt much "teeth" on a kwikset bump key, they are barely there at, ot takes patience with the file to make them right because the teeth are soo small.

yes, it was barry wells.

from the video's i've seen and the documents i've read, i'm under the impression it's more of the tool you're using to hit the bump key then the actual bump key itself that makes the biggest difference... might want to find something else to bump it with
