Does anyone have a list on just how many keyways Best IC core locks come in, and how many of those keyways are patented? Or perhaps its easier to just answer which keyways are not patented.
Thanks

I don't think that any of the Best keyways are still under patent protection. But some of them are difficult to get hold of as they were not common and people like Jet and ILCO are not making them.
There are small format cores that don't use Best keyways though. Medeco does their Keymark range in SFIC, however since you specifically asked about Best, I am guessing this isn't a problem for you.
If you have a specific problem, then please post the keyway(s) involved and one of us can give a correct answer.

Thanks guys
Its has proven difficult to find the blanks for these locks I have 3 best ic core locks I purchased off ebayand I dont have the keys for them.
I'm working on a paper right now regarding bumping locks, and part of this paper deals with ic core locks including best. Given I dont have a clue what keyways they are, they all are different, I wanted to order a complete list of best keyway blanks so I can have the proper bump keys fashioned for these locks. I have asked around and not many people carry any keyways outside of L,. I wonder why that is? Maybe its just bad luck. No locksmith I know has keyblanks for Best locks, the only keyway my locksmith has is in L.
Anyone know where I can order a set of blanks for their keyways? Thanks

Youre pissing up a rope here
go to your nearest locksmith and buy 3 new IC already keyed up with control ,master, and change keys.
then you have a better chance to make bump keys because then you will have more of the variables nailed down .

I'm following another auction currently on ebay that has keys including 1 control key. Theres one up for an arrow IC lock, and best. I already have an arrow , but if the price is right I'll pick up another.
I brought the actual locks into my locksmith on the way home today and at least I now know the keyways. I have an F,L,Q. go figure. Probably only Canadian's more specifically Quebecers will appreciate that one. FLQ stand for Front de Libération du Québec, they were a group founded inthe 60's who used violence to achieve their goals. Anyways I thought it was rather funny when he told me the keyways I had.
I bought a rather large assorted locks lot a few weeks ago and have these included. I also have a few medeco rim cylinders without keys too.
I have a medeco key that fits the lock, but as far as I know medeco's can not be bumped, so I'm not even bothering trying to make a key. I'll just keep them and get them re keyed.
I wouldnt have a chance in hell trying to open a medeco right now, I cant even open my arrow or best IC core's. I keep setting the pins incorrectly. I'm thinking about ordering one of those SFIC tools from peterson to try to pick just the contol pins, but I'm just not motivated enough right now. There are too many other fun things to do, like this paper on bumping.

jetkeys.com has a catalog with keyways on it somewhere. Varjeal has also posted a link to pdf's of the ilco catalog.
But, there are quite a few best keways. I've had dealings with the following
A,C,D,E,F,G,H,K,L
They really are all a different picking experience, which makes the whole line attractive to me from a hobby point of view.

Oh, let me count the keyways . . .
From Best only, you have:
28 or so old single & double letter keyways (a, b, c, dd, , , , k, m, ta, tb, etc.
24 or so W family keyways, also known as their formerly patented PKS keyways. Best's patent was reversed on these, so there is no protection against duplication.
10 Best Peaks keyways, that I know of. Best licenses the Peaks patent protected keyways from Kaba-Ilco, formerly Kaba High Security. Best DID NOT buy out Peaks.
They also make cores with keyways from other manufacturers like Arrow, which has their own family of IC keyways. Best SC and SD are the same as Arrow's 1C and 1D.
Beyond the Best horizon, you have KSP/Eagle keyways, Falcon, Schlage, Medeco Keymark, Peaks and others who have made their own keyways that fit into what is now affectionately called the SFIC format.

I ordered a bunch of BEST keyblanks from them about three weeks ago, and my order is still in "processing" and none of my e-mails have been responded to. I'm not too happy with that company right now. I'll post updates here as I hear more about my order, and if that is still a viable website. ~Grit.
