Metallurgy question--defeat hardened padlock shackles?

Someone tell this dufus to use padlock shims, a lot less <censored> than heating and then waiting and then cutting. Or if those are too complicated for you get a quality powered cutter.

I can just see some homeboy here standing outside with a friggin' blowtorch heating up a lock at 9 pm or sommat. It'd be just a wee bit obvious.

Worse for them, someone would probably call the cops, who would show up about when he was returning.

From the thievery standpoint (which WAS raised earlier on, those-who-delete) it is a goofy plan.

Were it one of those super hardened padlocks from Hades itself, why would any criminal worth his salt go after it? Hardware it's connected to is probably the weak point then - time for the crowbar instead.

It's unfeasible and impractical. Try using a dremel on a padlock shackle sometime - lock will get hot enough to burn you long before the shackle's case hardening fails to deter cutting.

Similar problem for a locksmith - if the lock is such that even destructive removal would be impractical, going after the hardware makes more sense. They have the advantage of time and legality to remove it, however.



As for those of you attacking people outright because it's a first post, I ask you this: If people cannot post what they think and what is relevant irrespective of their past posts, then why bother to at all? I think it makes you guys look worse for the prejudice expressed over one incident, not the n00b for not asking "how for to make all locks open!?!" 28.7 times a day. Disappointing to me, anyhow.

There weren't attacking him because this was his first post or because he was offerring a new idea. He was attacked because of the way he attacked another forum member.

FWIW- Padlock shims do not usually work on high quality padlocks.

take it from the visual designer and former printer and stuff - your collective signatures look like crap. i, personally wouldn't care less about such things if they simply looked okay. we have a guy with a key that looks like he spent entirely too much time in photoshop with a bevel tool, another guy that thinks putting text on a really bad 'blueprint' works - c'mon.

fix your own sigs before you talk about rules - if anything, one should apply wherein you do as good a job on expressing yourself as you have with picking locks. i expect we all have broadband connections, it shouldn't be that big a deal. make signatures people will like and let the dialup people cope.

Well, considering the direction this bandwagon is taking, I'm done with this discussion beyond this post.

They were opinions derived from the circumstances involved, not necessarily personal ones.

Getting attacked on a personal basis for impersonal opinions is unacceptable and inherently offensive to me. It's worse when being marginally open on this forum is encouraged.

Going on what I've seen in my relatively short tenure here, it is unlikely to end in this thread, if at all...and I had hoped to limit my participation to an extent that allowed me to stay out of these personally derived battles and cliques.

Personaly, I would be ashamed of myself to
drive anyone out of this forum or anywhere
without a serious cause. The whole idea of forums
is so new to the human psyche that I don't think
it's full reprecussions will be properly understood
for years to come.

Pretender, you have every right to express your
views, so does everyone else. I personally, have come
from a culture where "busting someones balls",
(Making jokes about someone, male or female) is
an integral part of friendship. It is like play-fighting,
and it is not personal.

All of us, at least me, have bad days, I actually
look forward to discussions here as a distraction.
There are threads, some deleted, some not, In which
my bad mood showed through instead of my best advice.
Such is life, we can now and will be in the future, *ssholes,
