I can't seem to get this friggin thing open, does anybody have a masterlock 140 and know anything about it? Or that has opened it? I think it may have security pins of some sort, if so, is there a certain rhythm I need to do to get it open?

yes, it has security pins. Do a search on techniques required to pick them . If you still have questions, post them here.

I have a Master 140 and, for God only knows WHAT reason, they are a BI#@$!!!! I can pick it, but it usually takes a while (much longer than it should, considering that it's a Master lock, which are usually very easy to pick). It definately has at least TWO security pins in it, probably spools but I wouldn't discount Master from using serrated pins, either. Come to think of it, that might explain why it's so hard to open but I can't seem to find any pins that are obviously spools...hmmm
This is definately NOT a good 'first' lock if you're just learning to pick; I've been going at it pretty steadily for a couple of months and it still takes me at least a couple of minutes to open it, usually. It's also the only lock I've got that takes more than 10-20 seconds, on average, to open with Raimundo's Bogotas, and I've got a Schlage Grade 2 Residential deadbolt that'll yield to those Bogotas in about 10 seconds usually, but that dam#3d Master 140 is STUBBORN...
Now, for a couple dollars less you can get a Masterlock that is, in my opinion, an excellent choice for a 'newbie lock', is the cheap one that's at every Wal-Mart, grocery store, and drug store in the world is this little blue-plastic encased thing (the ones in black plastic are the same--just look for the plastic Master that's around 5 bucks and you've got it):
(On the right your friend, the BLUE PLASTIC CHEAP MASTERLOCK, and on the left the EVIL Master 140)
It's got a more open keyway than the 140, and the security pins it has (all masters have security pins; they're really not that big a deal--search! ; and the MIT guide mentions them) are definately just a couple of spools that are real easy to spot and get around, and you can definately rake it open pretty quickly with a normal snake rake, not to mention Bogotas

The 140 is actually a very good lock to practice on. It was the third lock I tried, and with patience you'll greatly improve your skills. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think it's a 4 pin lock, and 3 of my top pins were spools.

DO A SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST!
Am I missing something, or is it that every single freakin n00b has to post a thread like: "ZOMFG the mASTER 140 Is hard". A search for "Master 140" only yields about ONE BILLION RESULTS
THERE IS EVEN A VIDEO EXPLAINING IT
Mad Mick wrote:FYI, 140 is a solid brass-bodied 4 pin lock. Expect from 1 to 3 spools (random). Normal pin usually located in 1st position, for proper plug alignment. Mushroom pins are not used in these locks.
No's 141, 2, 3, 4 are derivatives of the 140, with the 'attraction' of a different coloured vinyl sleeve on the lock, and also on the key bow.
The next person who starts a thread about the Master 140 is going to get their head ripped off.

Geez man, calm your friggin hormones a bit... I just searched this site and didn't have any luck. Maybe someday I'll be as good at lockpicking as you are at searching... but I don't think anybody is that good yet.

druis,
the master 140 is notoroious for spool pins which are diferent than mushroom pins. You will need to do some research on defeating diferent security pins before you can successfully bypass them. I am sure there are plenty of topics here on the forum for you to read............

I actually got it open! Is it good that my first lock is the ML 140? I also took that one guys advice and bought that one with the plastic body and I got that one open too! But I haven't mastered the whole "Do it easy everytime" thing. So... I'm gonna continue practicing.

Dev: From the pic, one is a naked wolf, and the other is a wolf in some form of sheep's clothing....they are both essentially the same lock.
#140 is the naked lock.
#141 is dressed in black rubber
#142 is in electric blue
#143 is in neutral 'don't approach me' green
#144 is in 'you lucky boy' red
If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!
