Homemade Bumpkey Pics

Here is a picture of my first bumpkey. It has succesfully opened 3 different deadbolts. (despite its uglyness :? )

I was surprised how easy bumping is.

I think it's kinda sexy, but then again, you should see my girlfriend!

Seriously though, nice job, especially if it works.

That looks like a Kwikset key... you say you've used it in padlocks? :o

It is a kwikset key. I have only opened deadbolts so far.
I do have a padlock with a kw1 keyway but I think it would be harder to bump.
I will give it a try and let you know.

I must say that the more I hear about bumping, the more it interests me. That's very nice work Robert; did you do that with tools or did you use a key cutting machine of some type? I'm really interested in trying to make some bumpkeys by hand (Dremel, vice, and a couple of files) and really thought that there would be some type of 'bumpkey howto' tutorial out there, but there doesn't seem to be one. I've read the TOOOL whitepaper and seen the 'bumping revisited' video, but there's really nothing out there about doing this WITHOUT a keycutter. The best thing I can come up with is to buy the locks you want to be able to bump, file them down so that each cut is even to the lowest cut that was originally on the key, file the shoulder, and give it a shot (decoder cards could also be used to find the measurement for the deepest cut), but frankly it would just be easier if someone would write up a little howto/faq that gives the measurements needed to make bumpkeys for common locks. Don't suppose anyone knows where something like this might be?

I haven't had any luck bumping so far. I tried bumping a CES euro cylinder, two locks with the KW1 keyway, and and American padlock cylinder, but no luck.

I personally feel that as long as the cuts you make in the key are at least as low as the lowest cut possible, and the little peaks between cuts are high enough to interact with the pins, you'll have a working bump key. Having a key cut to code based on the lock itself would probably make it more efficient, but that's what I think. Not based on real experience, I don't really have the effort or interest to go get a few made.

I used a file and a vise. My house key already had a #7 cut on it, so I just made the cuts on the blank a little deeper than that.

Thats right, I have a kwickset lock on my house.

Has anyone tryed bumping a weiser or kwikset with a bumpkey that was cut from a key cutting machine?? i have a kwikset, weiser, and schlage bump kay and can easily open a schlage but cannot bump a weiser... I think it might be because the original bottom pins have a flat spot insted of being pointed like the schlage pins...

haha. The more expensive the lock, the easier it is to open in most cases.
