ABUS 41/40 padlock

Postby SpinSpyder » 27 Aug 2005 2:03

I got myself one of these from the Public Storage place in my area. I recognized that the lock was rebranded "Public Storage", and noticed that the keys said ABUS on them. I also saw that they were selling the very distinct ABUS Diskus. I picked up one of the padlocks, which as far as I can tell is the ABUS 41/40.

Now my question is, does this padlock use security pins? As far as I can tell, it does, but I haven't found any post about it (I've been looking all day) and the ABUS site provides no information on the pins.

Can anyone help me out with that?

Does the diskus use security pins?
Yes. Most real diskus padlocks will also have a paracentric keyway.

I've never seen an Abus that didn't use security pins.

That padlock is a b*tch. Once you think you're proficent with pin tumblers you can humiliate youself with that one.

Note: I didn't get the Diskus, I got the 41/40, which is a standard looking padlock.

I've figured out from some picking + probing that it definitely uses spool pins. I've read and found from experience that the best thing to do would seem to be to push one pin up, and then slowly release the tension to JUST the point where the pin pops, while applying heavy pressure with the pick. But with my lock, I can't seem to get it to the point where I can start doing this. The pins just refuse to be pushed around. Can anyone give me advice on how to get it to act the right way for me?
