MasterLock No.5: OMG

This is the second post I make about my MasterLock No.5 about me not being able to pick it.

Now, what I realized, is that it's been over 1 month, at least 5 hours per day of my vacation, I have been trying to pick this lock with no success.

I remember on the back of the packaging of this lock it said, something about
a new design in this lock, there was like to bars on the side of the lock (inside of course) which may be that the problem.

I've done from extreme light tension, to very hard tension raking, feeler pick,
I tried it with a needle, with a pick gun and pretty much all you can imagine.

I've been reading a LOT the past 2 or 3 days about spools and serrateds work, but it seems the MasterLock No.5 does not have any of those. And even, it only has 4 normal pins !! What the heck can be so darn hard lol ?!

If anybody can help me here, it would be greatly appreciated, maybe a video of how some people pick this lock or something..

What you're describing sounds like a side bar system to me but this series of padlocks shouldnt have that feature as far as i know. anyone disagree?

It's that one, except the blue bar is yellow on mine.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you have a basic 4 pin lock there....no extra security devices are in this one. In fact, it uses the same plug/shell as the #3.

If you read the link again, the locking bars you refer to (named levers on the Master site), are actually the spring-loaded bolts which lock the shackle in place when closed.

What I suspect, is that you may have a difficult bitting. Have a look at the key and I think you may find a very shallow cut at the tip (pin 4), with a deep cut next to it (pin 3), making it difficult to set pin 4 without over-setting pin 3.

Actually, on the key, the first cut is practicly not there, just to say they cut it. pin 2,3 & 4 are all cut pretty deep. So if I think well, I would have to start from the back pins going onto the front pins. i will try this when I get home and let you guys know if this lock wants to cooperate.

I agree with Mick, some locks just don't like
to be picked See if you can get a deadbolt
like a Kwikset and start with one or 2 pins. Once
you start to get the hang of it you can always go
back to the Master.

Well, you are under-estimating me. I have unlocked some 5-pin deadbolt locks and many others. It's just this master lock that's getting me a bit confused, but i''ll pick it, not to worry about, I have a lot of patient and persistence

My bad Master You may find that at
least one of your pins sits at the shearline,
this makes raking more difficult. If you
get a "spongy" sort of feel, your oversetting
a pin. You will also hear a very audible snap
when you have set a pin. I also find that these
locks often pick well front to back, on at least
two of mine, the last pin does not need to be
picked at all.

I think you'll find that that is the problem. To reach that back pin, you'll have to get a little creative with your picking.

Try inserting the tension wrench at the top of the keyway, then using a slim hook with a tight curve on the end (make one from a wiper blade strip ), pivot it on the lower edge of the bottom laminated plate. This might help. Or you could over set all the pins using heavy tension, then gradually release...hopefully, pin 4 will be the last to drop...hold the tension when you have heard 3 clicks, then test all 4 stacks.

Try putting your tension bar on top, and your hook all the way to the back, and then withdraw it rapidly, almost ripping it out fo the lock. This should set those back two(at least) then you can go back in there with your hook or a smallish half diamond and clean up the rest.

Nothing works faster and more reliably on a difficult pinning than rocker picks. If you can afford it, grab a set.

So like I modded my feeler pick and I still get nothing, then I made myself a pick out of a needle that I grindid flat for the pins not to be affect when I am picking the others, no success for at least 2 hours I tried with no sound in the room, and the lock next to my ear trying to listen to the pins unbinding and guess what, nothing again.

Sorry forgot to mention that the red linning is the part I grinded off the original feeler pick.
